Research Paper of the Week: Improving Access to General Practice for People with Severe and Multiple Disadvantage 🔍 Study Insights: This qualitative study, led by Lucy Potter at Centre for Academic Primary Care, reveals the power of co-production in creating improvements in patients with severe and multiple disadvantage (SMD). 🛠️ Key Innovations: - Inclusion Patient List: Prioritising patients with SMD for more flexible access and continuity through a care coordinator and a dedicated micro-team. - Information Sharing: Developing tools to ensure sensitive and efficient communication about patients' backgrounds and needs. - Trauma-Informed Care Training: For all practice staff, enhancing understanding and improving interactions with SMD patients. 📈 Looking Forward: These principles should be implemented across the country. The study also shows that meaningful engagement with patients and integration of their perspectives into service design improves care. Clinician researchers are absolutely essential in health care. They combine scientific research with patient care to drive innovation and evidence based practice. Despite their important role, they face significant challenges requiring urgent reforms. Research Australia’s latest report — Clinician Researchers: Research Activating the Health System — addresses the policy gaps and insufficient support by highlighting the experiences of 40 clinician researchers across various disciplines and career stages. While Long #COVID is thought to impact hundreds of thousands of people in Australia and around the world, there is little understanding into why the condition and the neurological complications linked to it occur.    A new WEHI-led project hoping to solve these unknowns has been awarded over $980,000 in funding from the Medical Research Future Fund (#MRFF) 2023 Post-Acute Sequalae of COVID-19 Grant Opportunity.      The research team hopes to unravel the molecular mechanisms in the brain that drive some neurological complications, like brain fog, and also identify biomarkers in the blood that could be used to diagnose patients at risk of developing long COVID.     The project 'Clearing the Fog: Defining the molecular mechanism of neurological PASC to identify biomarkers for Long COVID ' will be led by Dr Marcel Doerflinger, Professor Rory Bowden and Dr Maria Tanzer, in collaboration with Dr Emily Eriksson (co-lead of WEHI’s Covid Profile study), Professor Anthony Hannan (The Florey Institute) and Professor seth masters (the Hudson Institute of Medical Research).    A brilliant collaboration that could potentially lead to new treatments for long COVID in the future. https://lnkd.in/gWk9iG8D

Very happy to share our last article, co-authored with Lionel PERRIER and Xavier JOUTARD, now available in Applied Economics. In this study, we estimate patient preferences while controlling for unobserved choice sets, and we investigate whether patients are actively choosing their provider for cancer care. We found that the patient – hospital distance as well as the specialization profile of providers appears to be internalized in the pre-selection process, while patients rather consider waiting times, hospital quality, and other provider attributes to make their final choice. We also found that patients would be treated in higher-quality hospitals under complete information (i.e., if they had the opportunity to choose among all available providers).
