Decarceration goes hand-in-hand with LGBTQ liberation. 🏳️⚧️ 🏳️🌈 55 years ago today, the NYPD raided Stonewall Inn. This common occurrence was part of a broader societal effort to enforce laws against public expressions of queerness. And while the Stonewall Uprising would spark a series of events that advanced LGBTQ rights, the practices of criminalizing queerness did not end in 1969. Nor in 2015 when the US Supreme Court legalized gay marraige. ✊🏾 As we continue the fight for collective freedom, it’s important to consider the ways our criminal justice system disproportionately impacts LGBTQ communities. Let’s take a closer look: → LGBTQ youth are 120% more likely to experience homelessness. → Despite a high prevalence of mental health issues, 56% of LGBTQ youth who sought mental health care in the past year were unable to access it. → Multiple states have enacted or proposed laws banning access to gender-affirming care for transgender and nonbinary folks. Homelessness, mental health issues, and discriminatory legislation all increase the likelihood of incarceration. Leaving LGBTQ indivuals much more susceptible to the criminal justice system. Pride has always been about challenging systemic oppression and reimagining a world where everyone is free to be their authentic selves. As we remember the legacy of Stonewall, let’s honor the courage of those who fought and continue to fight for our rights. Their struggle is our struggle, and their liberation is our liberation. Happy Pride! 🌈 #LGBTQLiberation #Pride2024 #RememberStonewall #InvestInFreedom
I appreciate you sharing the numbers; it's crucial to measure the real progress being made for the LGBTQ community. This is a collective effort, and there's still much work to be done. As an ally, I feel a responsibility to advocate for a more equal society. Thank you for your dedication to supporting the community and for opening up this important conversation.
I enjoyed learning about the NY landmark, Stonewall Inn from your previous post. This is a reminder that we've come a long way but a lot more to go while we celebrate the Pride month.
Reflecting on Stonewall, we see our journey towards equality is linked with broader social justice issues. Advocating for a society where everyone can live authentically is essential.
There's still a long journey ahead. Yes, progress has been made, but it often feels like two steps forward, one step back. We must recognize that diversity exists and that everyone deserves equal rights. Supporting the LGBTQ community through allyship is essential—it's a shared fight, and there are numerous ways for others to contribute and help. Thank you for starting this important conversation!
The statistics you shared about homelessness, mental health access, and gender-affirming care are concerning. It highlights the need for a more inclusive and supportive society.
These statistics are very eye opening to read. Thanks for sharing them and all the work you are doing.
Thank you for raising awareness. It is crucial for this community to be supported from their youth. It is disappointing to see bills limiting their rights. It is very important to vote.
