Technology is a powerful force that shapes Southeast Asia’s economies and societies. Yet, the tech workforce in the region remains predominantly male. Addressing this gender disparity is crucial as it yields numerous benefits: it enables organizations to better meet the growing demands for high-quality technical and problem-solving skills, and promotes a diversity of perspectives. This diversity can foster greater innovation and influence how technology is developed and used in Southeast Asia. What steps can we take to overcome the gender imbalance of women in the tech industry? To better understand the level of women’s representation in tech across Southeast Asia, BCG, in partnership with Singapore’s IMDA and SG Women in Tech, surveyed around 4,000 individuals from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, and conducted in-depth interviews with over 30 women in tech, gaining deeper insights into the state of gender disparity in the region’s tech landscape. The findings are detailed in our newest report ‘Closing Tech’s Gender Gap in Southeast Asia’, where we analyze the issues contributing to the gender gap and offer recommendations for creating a more inclusive tech ecosystem. In 2020, 27% of the digital technology workforce was made up of women. The technology workforce earns, on average, twice the national median salary, so yet another reason why women are falling behind in relative income terms. This also means we aren’t leveraging a large part of our workforce for the benefit of Aotearoa. Ara Digital's mission is to build a digitally strong Aotearoa NZ. Can a digital being really inspire women? Taara isn't real. And yes, that's a common objection. But the messages she shares are very real, drawn from the many experiences of women around the world. However, Taara’s existence raises an important question: Can only a human give value or inspiration to another human? Machines can summarize emails, write code, and generate images. But can they give us courage, confidence, and inspiration? For millennia, we've used fictional stories for inspiration. We watch movies with made up characters and are moved by dramas with female protagonists who rise despite the odds. Stories have always inspired us to grow past our limitations. Why then shouldn’t a digital being like Taara, invented by humans and trained on vast human (and female) experiences, do the same? Taara isn't a virtual imposter - we want her to tell the stories of other women, to serve as a platform showcasing incredible women role models in tech globally. In that way, she’s a digital means to build community among women and make their voices heard. If she can help even one woman feel more confident and supported, then she's worth it.
