Recently, I had a breakfast meeting with a HR Director of a MNC, and his words at the end of our conversation left a strong impression: "I feel very comfortable talking to you, maybe because we share the same values." This sentiment shows the power of shared values. When our values align, there's a common understanding that accelerates understanding and connection. In organisations, we always talk about vision, mission and values. These are not just checklist of things to hang on our office wall. These are IMPORTANT elements that is the foundation of every organisation. (1) Vision represents what we aspire to achieve. (2) Mission outlines the actions we take in the present to manifest that vision. (3) Value, however, holds a special place:- It is the core beliefs that an organization upholds. It defines not just what we do but who we are working with. Our values shape our culture, drive our behaviors, and influence our actions and reactions. Values anchor of an organization's identity, and they're important in creating a healthy and productive work environment. When our values align, it fosters collaboration and a shared sense of purpose, ultimately bringing us closer to our collective vision. When you run a business or accountable for company P&L, which do you think is the priority? (1) Make it big, or (2) Make it strong, or (3) Make it last? Here's the logic: "Make it big first, then make it strong, and ultimately make it sustainable and lasting." Starting by making your business big can often provide the resources and reach needed to strengthen your position in the market. Also, gaining the advantage of economy of scale. Once you have established presence, you can focus on strengthening your operations, customer base, and market standing. In gist, operations excellence. Finally, you work on making your business sustainable and lasting, ensuring it can weather changes and stand the test of time. After all, everyone is talking about ESG too :) For VHR, our focus has always been to be strong in a niche market. Now, after over a decade of operations, We start to think about ways to make it last to ensure long-term success and impact. 🌍 A Lesson in Cross-Cultural HR: The Power of Understanding 🌍 As an International HR professional, I've had the privilege of working with diverse teams across the globe. One experience that stands out and taught me a profound lesson about cultural sensitivity happened when I transitioned from working virtually with British companies from Nepal to my current role in Thailand. In my previous virtual roles with British companies, I was accustomed to a very direct and straightforward style of communication. Feedback was given openly, and decisions were made quickly. However, when I started working in Thailand, I encountered a different approach. Here, maintaining harmony, indirect communication, and respecting hierarchy were deeply valued. During one of my first major projects in Thailand, I noticed that feedback was often delivered indirectly, with a strong emphasis on maintaining group harmony. Coming from a British-influenced background, I initially struggled with this approach. I remember one meeting where I gave direct feedback on a proposal, which unintentionally caused discomfort among my Thai colleagues. The atmosphere in the room became tense, and the project's progress slowed down. Realizing the cultural disconnect, I took the initiative to learn more about Thai communication styles. I reached out to the team members one on one, where we discussed the importance of "saving face" in Thai culture and the value of direct communication that I was accustomed to. We practiced ways to give feedback that respected these cultural nuances, promoting active listening and empathy. Gradually, the environment improved. I learned to provide feedback in a more nuanced and respectful manner, and my Thai colleagues felt more comfortable sharing their ideas. Our project regained momentum and was completed successfully. This experience underscored the importance of understanding and respecting cultural differences. By fostering a culture of empathy and openness, we can transform potential conflicts into opportunities for growth and collaboration. Being an entrepreneur can be incredibly demanding, and lately, I've found myself caught up in the whirlwind of responsibilities. It's tough when I realize I've missed out on quality time with my daughters. That's why I've made a simple request to them - when I come home, I ask them to share just one thing about their day, especially what they've experienced in class. It's a small but meaningful way for us to stay connected amidst the busy schedules. Sometimes, my drive to push hard and succeed is questioned, especially by my mom. “Why do you want to push so hard for?” she would say. But for me, it's about creating a better future not just for myself and my family, but also for the recruitment industry in Malaysia.
