2030 World Cup: Tournament to be held across six countries in three. continents. The 2030 World Cup will be held across six countries in three continents, Fifa has confirmed. Spain, Portugal and Morocco have been named as the co-hosts, with the opening three matches taking place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. The opening matches in South America are to mark the World Cup's centenary as it will be 100 years since the inaugural tournament in Montevideo. The decision is set to be ratified at a Fifa congress next year. Fifa also confirmed only bids from countries from the Asian Football Confederation and the Oceania Football Confederation will be considered for the 2034 finals. Following that decision, Saudi Arabia announced it would be bidding to host the tournament in 2034 for the first time. Fifa's decision to host the tournament across multiple continents has drawn criticism, with one supporter's body accusing football's world governing body of engaging in a "cycle of destruction against the greatest tournament on Earth". "[It's] horrendous for supporters, disregards the environment and rolls the red carpet out to a host for 2034 with an appalling human rights record. It's the end of the World Cup as we know it," said Football Supporters Europe. Fifa president Gianni Infantino said: "In a divided world, Fifa and football are uniting "The Fifa Council, representing the entire world of football, unanimously agreed to celebrate the centenary of the Fifa World Cup, whose first edition was played in Uruguay in 1930, in the most appropriate way. "In 2030, we will have a unique global footprint, three continents - Africa, Europe and South America - six countries - Argentina, Morocco, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain and Uruguay - welcoming and uniting the world while celebrating together the beautiful game, the centenary and the Fifa World Cup." Montevideo in Uruguay, the city which hosted the first World Cup match in 1930, is poised to stage the opening game in 2030 with matches in Argentina and Paraguay to follow. The rest of the 48-team tournament will then move to north Africa and Europe. The change of hemispheres means World Cup teams could find themselves playing in two different seasons a the same tournament. If the 2030 proposal is approved, Morocco would become only the second African nation to host a World Cup, after South Africa in 2010. Spain has been named as joint-host weeks after former football federation chief Luis Rubiales resigned following criticism for kissing Jenni Hermoso at the Women's World Cup. Appearing in court, Rubiales was given a restraining order by a Spanish judge, but denied sexually assaulting Hermoso. Spain last hosted the World Cup in 1982, with Italy winning the tournament for the third time. Portugal has never hosted the tournament, but Euro 2004 was held there. As in previous World Cups, Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Spain, Portugal and Morocco will all qualify automatically as co-hosts.

Senior Strategy Manager at Manchester United | Ex-OC&C Strategy Consultants | University of Oxford: BA History (1st Class); M.St History (Distinction)
Quick book recommendation and plug for Matt Roller- who has recently released his excellent first book White Hot: The Inside Story of England Cricket's Double World Champions. Charting England Cricket's rise from also-rans to pioneers of the white-ball game, it is a brilliant behind-the-scenes account of arguably the most dominant national team in the history of English sport. It also acts as a real-life case study in how sporting organisations can create, articulate and implement a successful long-term strategy; it highlights how embracing a culture of innovation and inclusivity can help to build a dynamic and adaptable team that is greater than the sum of its parts; and it neatly illustrates just how much luck is ultimately required in elite sport - therefore serving as a reminder that, despite the external fixation on short-term results and outcomes, sustainable success is most often founded on long-term, principle-based processes. Would thoroughly, thoroughly recommend.
Four years ago today, England’s men won their first-ever 50-over World Cup after an unforgettable final against New Zealand at Lord’s White Hot is the inside story of the white-ball revolution that enabled that success – and England’s triumph in the T20 World Cup three years later, when they became the first men’s team to hold both World Cups simultaneously 🔗https://lnkd.in/ekFm3SAs

Hello LinkedIn Network, As we celebrate #HispanicHeritageMonth, let's take a moment to honor milestones, both monumental and subtle. I had the privilege of attending Chile's Rugby World Cup debut against Japan in Toulouse on the 10th of September and what a historic moment it was! Chile joins Argentina and Uruguay as the third South American country to be featured in this esteemed competition. The fervor among the players and supporters was a palpable testament to the power of perseverance and audacity. Why is this relevant for businesses looking to scale or pivot? Simply put, it's about the significance of making a bold entrance. Stepping onto a larger platform—whether a global sporting event or a new market—requires the right team, and that's where my expertise comes in. If your organization aims for its own 'world stage,' needing talent to match that ambition, let's connect. Here's to embracing audacity, elevating our teams, and achieving unparalleled milestones. #RugbyWorldCup2023 #Chile #HispanicHeritageMonth #Audacity #TalentAcquisition Feel free to reach out. Let's accomplish the extraordinary together. 🤝 https://lnkd.in/e7jCzSfU

Day 16 of regular contents on social media 😁 Did you know that the Euro 2020 tournament, played in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was the first European Championship to be held across multiple countries? ⚽🌍 This unique format saw 11 cities in 11 different nations host matches, stretching from Baku in Azerbaijan to Glasgow in Scotland. The idea behind this pan-European tournament was to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first European Championship, held in 1960. While the concept received mixed reactions, it certainly made for an interesting logistical challenge and a truly continent-wide celebration of football. Another fascinating fact about this tournament is that it featured the highest scoring final in the history of the European Championship. Italy's victory over England in a nail-biting penalty shootout came after a 1-1 draw, bringing the total goals in the final to 2 - a record when including the decisive penalties. The Euro Cup continues to be one of the most-watched sporting events globally, showcasing not just athletic prowess but also the rich tapestry of European cultures and the unifying power of football. From underdog stories to legendary performances, each tournament adds new chapters to the beautiful game's history. #euro2020 #europeanchampionship #footballhistory #UefaEuro2024 #paneuropeantournament #soccerfacts #EuroTrivia #footballculture #sportingevents #internationalfootball #europeanfootball #footballtournament #EURO2024 #sportstrivia #footballfans #beautifulgame #SoccerHistory #europeansports #FootballHeritage #SportingAchievement

Our #ChartOfTheWeek this week compares how host nations have placed throughout the history of the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™ . Of the 9 world cups hosted to date, 6 host nations have only reached the quarter finals before bowing out. Only the USA and the Matildas this year have reached the semi finals when hosting. In 2003 the USA placed 3rd, which the Matildas have the opportunity to match in Saturday’s game against Sweden. The USA is also the only host nation to have won a world cup at home, way back in 1999. Australia’s Matildas have performed remarkably well. The other three teams in the top 4 - England, Spain and Sweden - have invested heavily in their domestic women’s leagues over multiple years to develop players and make their leagues among the best in the world. Time will tell which of the four bids (representing a total of 7 individual nations) will be successful to host the next Women’s World Cup. The 2027 hosts will look to challenge Australia and the USA’s results. Similarly, the Olympics in France next year will put the challenge onto Les Bleues. 🇫🇷 But we can be certain the Matildas will be making it very tough for them at both competitions. 🇦🇺 #data #matildas #worldcup
