Media Release: Pacific Islands Forum Chair and Prime Minister of the Cook Islands, the Honorable Mark Brown, delivered a compelling address at the 18th East Asia Summit, where he highlighted the significance of the Pacific region and addressed critical issues facing the #BluePacific. “In the Pacific we don’t have to look far to pinpoint the epicentrum of our growth –it is the Blue Pacific Ocean. It is from our Ocean that we derive our history – our connection to each other – our culture – our livelihoods – our being as Pacific peoples. As large oceanic states, we are custodians of nearly 20 percent of the earth’s surface, and we place great cultural and spiritual value on our ocean and land, as our common heritage.” Read more: https://bit.ly/3EsO5EJ

Today, the White House celebrates the 25th Annuversary of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI). President Biden and Vice President Harris celebrate the diversity of cultures, breadth of achievement, and remarkable contributions of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) communities, while also recognizing the systemic barriers to equity, justice, and opportunity that still put the American dream out of reach for far too many AA and NHPI people across the United States. For more than three years, the Biden-Harris Administration has leveraged the full force of the Federal Government to ensure the promise of America for all AA and NHPI communities — including by issuing an Executive Order establishing the President’s Advisory Commission and White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI). https://lnkd.in/ebzN32bN

St. Helena's Unarthed Legacy: A Powerful Documentary on History, Identity, and Reconciliation History Meets the Present on a Remote Island St. Helena, a volcanic speck in the South Atlantic, is known for its dramatic scenery and its most famous resident - Napoleon Bonaparte. But beneath the island's surface lies a darker truth waiting to be unearthed. Annina van Neel, overseeing the construction of St. Helena's long-awaited airport, stumbles upon a discovery that will forever change the island's narrative. The excavation unearths the remains of thousands of enslaved Africans, a powerful testament to the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade. A Legacy of the Enslaved This discovery sparks a crucial conversation. Many islanders have ancestral ties to these enslaved people. The question becomes: how can they create a memorial that truly honors this tragic past and fosters reconciliation? Annina, determined to advocate for this unearthed legacy, seeks the expertise of Peggy King Jorde, an African American preservationist with a lifelong dedication to social justice. Together, they navigate the complexities of this sensitive issue, engaging with the islanders and exploring their own evolving understanding of the island's history. This documentary is a must-watch for anyone interested in: The lingering effects of colonialism and the slave trade The importance of historical preservation and ancestral connection Building a more inclusive and honest narrative about the past The power of collaboration and activism in fostering reconciliation This is more than just a historical discovery.
