Rescued: Orphaned hedgehog 🦔 Recently, a 30-gram baby hedgehog arrived at OWL & BIRDS OF PREY RESCUE STATION Haringsee! Orphaned baby hedgehogs usually need human help to survive, but before stepping in, we should always make sure they truly need our help. 🔍 Larger baby hedgehogs (around 3 to 4 weeks old and around 180-200 gram) often leave their nest to explore and can find their way back without a problem. If you see a healthy, young hedgehog, give it space as its mother is likely nearby! 🐾 However, in the case of this tiny patient, our expert team is giving the foundling the care he needs to be released back into the wild once he's gained a little weight. 🦔💖 Check out this helpful guide for more insights about hedgehogs: https://lnkd.in/deGkcXQd #OwlAndBirdsOfPreySanctuaryHaringsee #AnimalWelfare #StoryTelling #Hedgehog

Helping organisations & individuals to give nature a boost. Rewilding here in the UK, providing nature-based solutions for those who want to invest in carbon mitigation & biodiversity restoration
Bats deserve way more kudos than they get... They are mammals. Mammals that gained the ability of flight (something I'm sure we've all dreamed of). Mammals that navigate their way around the world, while flying, by shouting at the air and listening to what echoes back to them. Not only does this stop them flying into walls, but allows them to catch small flying insects like moths. THEY SHOUT TO SEE THE WORLD! Mammals that give birth while hanging upside down, and then catch their babies. Mammals that pollinate around 300 fruit, and spread cacao seeds, so you've got bats to thank for chocolate! Plus around 80 medicines that come from plants that rely on bats. Mammals that can reach 100 miles per hour. So yes, they received some bad press in early 2020, but I really don't think that was their fault. Bats are incredible. So I guess the really important question is - which of their superpowers would you like most? Flight, echolocation or super speed? (And if you'd like to support these awesome creatures here in the UK, ask me about sponsoring a bat roost on one of our nature reserves - I can tell you all about what the bat surveyors found on our sites 😊) #rewilding #naturerestoration #biodiversityconservation #ecosystemservices #business

"How to Determine if a Turtle Is Dead" 🟩 Determining if a turtle is dead can be challenging due to their ability to remain still for extended periods. First, gently touch or tap the turtle’s shell and limbs. If there is no movement or reaction, observe the turtle's eyes; a dead turtle's eyes will often appear sunken or cloudy. Check for breathing by watching for the rise and fall of the chest or placing a small mirror near its nostrils to see if it fogs up. Additionally, a foul odor can indicate decomposition. If you're still unsure, consult a veterinarian for a definitive assessment. Remember, turtles can enter a state of brumation (hibernation) and may appear lifeless during this time, so thorough checks are crucial before concluding. ⏩Read more: https://lnkd.in/gKuhWBxw #Turtle #Turtleomg #TurtleHealthTips #TurtleProblems #TurtleEmergency #TurtleSymptoms #Turtleworld #TurtleLover #followformore #followyou #foryoupage

Sharing this post can help to save many hedgehogs. Over the next few weeks Hedgehog Mums will start to give birth. If you do discover, or disturb them, PLEASE, don't disturb further, move away quickly and quietly. If you do disturb them in the first few days before she has fully bonded, especially first timers, she is likely to kill or harm them. If she leaves the nest, move away out of sight and monitor. If she doesn't return soon after, or the baby hoglets start screaming like mini sirens going off, then its likely she may have abandoned them. You must immediately seek help of an experienced rescue, or a very experienced & knowledgeable carer. If the nest is broken and mum remains with the babies, YOU MUST FIRST SEPARATE MUM FROM THE BABIES BY PUTTING HER IN A SEPARATE BOX and AWAY FROM THE BABIES ALONG WITH THEIR BEDDING FOR/DURING TRANSIT TO A RESCUE, OR? Please, leave it to the rescue to reunite them. This way they have the best chance of surviving. If you don't follow this routine, again, mum is very likely to abandon/harm them, and THEY WILL probably die without being giving a chance. Please do not attempt to feed them yourselves, leave it to the rescue who have all the Knowledge/Equipment/Specialist Foods. Feeding hoglets is like learning to drive a car, you read how to do it, know how to do it, see how to do it, getting behind the wheel, well, that's when it becomes difficult. SHARING THIS POST WILL CERTAINLY DO SO MUCH GOOD. THANK YOU FOR READING. #diversity #Scorpions are arachnids that have eight legs and a pair of pincers. They are found in a variety of habitats, including #deserts, #forests, #grasslands, and caves. They are nocturnal and are most active at night. Scorpions are carnivorous and feed on #insects, #spiders, and other small animals. They have a venomous sting that they use to subdue their prey and defend themselves from predators. Scorpions give birth to live young and the mother provides protection and #nourishment for them until they are able to hunt on their own. Breeding is seasonal and males find females by localizing a #pheromone. Mating involves a complicated courtship and the male extrudes a glandular secretion to attach the #spermatophore, which fertilizes the female. Females mate multiple times and can produce multiple clutches of offspring from one #mating. The birth process can last from several hours to several days and occurs throughout the year for tropical species, while temperate species give birth in spring and summer. The young scorpions are defenceless and cannot survive on their own immediately after birth. Therefore, they #crawl onto the mother's back where they receive protection and nourishment. The mother provides water through her cuticle, which the young scorpions absorb through their own. They also #utilize food reserves in their bodies until they are able to hunt and capture prey on their own. This association with the #mother is essential for the survival of the young scorpions as they need her protection and nourishment to successfully molt into a fully functional #cuticle. Once they have molted, they are able to leave the mother and assume #independence. When a mother scorpion can't find enough food for herself and her offspring, she may resort to cannibalism. This can involve eating weak or sickly young or, as a last resort, eating her own offspring for protein. Not all scorpion species exhibit this behavior, and environmental factors can impact their ability to reproduce. Additionally, scorpions are not always able to successfully reproduce due to environmental factors such as lack of food or water. Scorpions are #carnivorous animals that feed on a variety of small animals. While most scorpions are sit and wait #predators that remain motionless until a suitable #victim has moved into an ambush zone, they have #sophisticated behaviours that allow them to detect and capture their prey. Scorpions have the ability to sense tiny ground vibrations and some can even detect airborne vibrations of flying insects. These behaviours allow them to determine the precise distance and direction of their prey. Once the prey has been detected, the scorpion turns, runs to the prey, and seizes it. If the prey is relatively large, aggressive, or active, the scorpion will sting it. However, if the prey is small and passive, the scorpion will simply hold it with its #pedipalps as it is eaten. #nature #terrestrial #earth #planet #ceylon #diversity

Hey connections, The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is a large bear native to the Arctic and surrounding areas. It is closely related to the brown bear, and the two species can interbreed. The polar bear is the largest extant species of bear and land carnivore, with adult males weighing 300–800 kg (700–1,800 lb). The species is sexually dimorphic, as adult females are much smaller. The polar bear is white- or yellowish-furred with black skin and a thick layer of fat. It is more slender than the brown bear, with a narrower skull, longer neck and lower shoulder hump. Its teeth are sharper and more adapted to cutting meat. The paws are large and allow the bear to walk on ice and paddle in the water.Polar bears are both terrestrial and pagophilic (ice-living) and are considered to be marine mammals due to their dependence on marine ecosystems. They prefer the annual sea ice, but live on land when the ice melts in the summer. They are mostly carnivorous and specialized for preying on seals, particularly ringed seals and bearded seals. Such prey is typically taken by ambush; the bear may stalk its prey on the ice or in the water, but also will stay at a breathing hole or ice edge to wait for prey to swim by. The bear primarily feeds on the seal's energy-rich blubber. Other food includes walruses, beluga whales and some terrestrial foods. Polar bears are usually solitary with large home ranges, but can be found in groups when on land. During the breeding season, male bears guard females and defend them from rivals. Mothers give birth to cubs in a maternity den during the winter, which is also when they hibernate. Young stay with their mother for up to two and a half years. #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinking #snsdesignthinkers
