OK, so normally I post zero political stuff online. But this is ridiculous. As you can see, I found out that my application for naturalisation in the UK is refused. Most people have no idea, but I am actually a Norwegian citizen. However, I have lived in the UK since I was 14 (so now, 19 years ago). I have full settled status here, I have my family here, I went to school here, I went to university here, I pay taxes here, I started ThinkSono here. We're literally supporting the NHS with tackling one of the biggest problems in healthcare, which is detection of blood clots. The reason the application was refused is very simple. I am not considered of "good character" Why? Because more than 3 years ago, I got into an accident with a cyclist (he's fine) and I got a few points on my license. I went to court and paid the fine. That's it. Based on this logic, anyone in the UK who has ever got anything on their record ever in their entire lifetime will not be eligible for naturalisation. If they have children here, their children might also not get citizenship unless their parent is a citizen. If the UK wants to actually retain its EU/EEA tech talent then it needs to treat us with a little more appreciation. I understand that it's not personal. A lot of this is literally a box ticking exercise, and the person who assessed my application probably has no idea who I am, what I do etc. But that's the point isn't it? They basically ignored everything in my application, and in their mind I am not of "good character". From this perspective, there is zero difference between me and literally someone who was in prison for a major crime. I will talk to my lawyer and see what the next steps are, but I wanted to post this so it's clear to everyone, including those who are voting in the general election to know that this is how the Home Office treats UK residents who have spent most of their life living and contributing to this country. As the immigration issue rages on, bear in mind that it is a two way street. At least for me, I will have to reconsider the UK as my home because I would rather build and invest in a place that places higher value on what people like me bring to the table too.

Fouad Al-Noor sorry to hear, this is insanity that keeps piling on the general Brexit narrative and relative thinking. What you could do, and I mean it, is campaign against this by getting somebody to nominate you for OBE for your NHS/TS related work, get the title, and then bring your case to the newspapers/government, highlighting they can do way better. Go for their throat for other people's sake as well.

I hear you can buy citizenship in other countries. Backup plan after you exit.

Nothing quite like the commitment needed to solve a problem for the NHS being rewarded like this. Sorry to read it

Sorry but your post shows your lack of knowledge of the law (no offense meant as you are not a lawyer :D). You will be able to naturalise in due course or with good representations. I advise you to discuss with an Immigration solicitor first (does not have to be me but just do it) !

The sad reality is that a lot of migrants who have genuinely built a life & consider the UK as their home genuinely do not feel welcome. My Gran Mother was a nurse in the NHS & when she retired she left & my parents both in the health sector took early retirement & left as well. Stories such as yours are the norm and it's a tick box exercise, but the message they is send is you are not welcome.

So sorry to hear this Fouad Al-Noor. You are literally innovating for the public good with technology that will save hundreds of thousands of lives and save millions in tax payers money that could be better spent elsewhere in the NHS and much further afield. But you unfortunately live in a country where the current government wouldn't recognise a good idea if it slapped them in the face and everyone outside London has been persuaded by some very very nasty people that "immigrants" are bad people. You're much better off with Norwegian citizenship my friend.

I'm sorry to read this post. I also came through the UK immigration system and I was granted naturalisation, but it was a long and hard road. I often felt, like you, that I was exactly the type of person they should want in the country. (1) High Salary (2) high tax payer (3) spent money out / travelled to new places in the country (4) started a business & created jobs, etc. but that all that I was contributing wasn't valuable. All my time, love and care I put into the country - volunteering, being a good neighbour, and more - was worthless. It's an awful feeling to feel the place you love so much doesn't want you. I hope that you'll be granted naturalisation soon. I'm so sorry this is your experience.

Funny that UK is home for many globally wanted Criminals who are happily living in most expensive houses in London, bought with their black money! And here is someone is considered of “not good character” for a traffic incident! You can’t make it up could you?
