I want to introduce Singular:Edge, the multi-sensor electronic board designed by Singular Things to be the Swiss army knife ready for the development of IoT and Edge Computing solutions with low-power artificial intelligence, known as #TinyML.
This is a device that combines two of Espressif Systems most popular models, ESP32-S3 and ESP32-C6, a combination that greatly expands the possibilities of combining interfaces, communication methods, and sensors in a very versatile way. Without a doubt, it is a device prepared to take advantage of the rise of intelligence at the Edge that we are currently experiencing.
But what is truly interesting is that Singular:Edge is an ultra-low-power device. This is because it is based exclusively on MCUs, small processors with power consumption in the micro-watt scale. In other words, these devices can operate on batteries for weeks, months, or even years, depending on the workload, avoiding the common logistical barriers in large-scale IoT projects. And this is where TinyML comes into play, as thanks to constantly evolving optimization techniques, it is becoming easier and easier to run complex AI models on these tiny microcontrollers.
The board has been designed with the philosophy of achieving a lot with limited resources and anticipates a moment of widespread and cost-effective adoption of AI at the Edge. Therefore, Singular:Edge is destined to become synonymous with TinyML.
At its core, Singular:Edge is ready to handle aspects such as brightness, color, temperature, humidity, complex movements, altitude, and it has two full-spectrum microphones, video capabilities, and much more. It includes exposed pins that allow for additional sensors of any type.
Here are some possible use cases for Singular:Edge:
✅ Development of smart home products compatible with the Matter protocol and ecosystem.
✅ Automation of processes in agriculture and livestock in remote areas.
✅ Predictive maintenance of industrial or consumer machinery.
✅ Object classification and detection in smart buildings or outdoor environments.
✅ Wearable devices for tracking physical activity and health.
✅ Leak detection in critical environments.
However, one of the most fascinating aspects is its compatibility with the Matter protocol, thanks to the pivotal role played by the ESP32-C6 in this protocol and its role as a gateway to the home device ecosystem. This aspect makes the board more than just a reference device; it places it in a privileged position to lead innovation around the #Matter protocol and smart homes.
Exciting moments are on the horizon for the widespread adoption of TinyML, and these compact microcontrollers will continue to gain capabilities. Boards like Singular:Edge indicate that Edge Computing will be home to ubiquitous intelligence in the future.
Check Singular:Edge Kickstarter campaign, it is already up and running!
