That's true, many North American Performing Arts organizations and companies are years ahead of most of the European organizations in reflecting the aspects Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). They address racial injustice, gender disparity, and ableism, as well as discrimination and power abuse more serious and with more financial power. We should take this as an example in order to quickly catch up on these aspects and not always be years behind, as with #metoo a.o.

How often do we walk the road to Damascus How often have we experienced an epiphany along our journey. Are we capable of understanding such sudden and great revelations. How often have we just thought it was a figment of our imagination. How sometimes we think we have every answer, so wrong. How our paradigm prevents risk to discover more. How determined are we to search the truth, or merely follow vanity thinking we know best. Whether we enjoy the circus or opera,  life of acceptance is still the same. Accept that there are different formula's and equations. If the gift of suggestion is offered then you need to discover its source. Consider all options. GWW.

Friday Arts! It is so cool living in Brisbane … the erupting epicentre of the arts in this country! There is so much going on in this town (and this state) in the arts. Our own #QueenslandTheatre is amazing, as are the other majors in town … #Circa, #QueenslandBallet, #OperaQueensland, and #QSO. The Festivals are pretty fabulous also, and the biggest Arts Festival of all - the Cultural Olympiad - is on its way also. But if you look a little deeper, there are also rumblings outside the play space of the majors. The new kid on the block is Springboard Opera, and I am the chair of the board. With my fellow other directors Leslie Martin, Luisa Tarnawski, Gheorja Haidley and Scott Mullane, I am putting together a purpose-built Opera Company here in BrisVegas. Our words are: Supporting Emerging Artists Transforming the Opera Idea We’ve had one public outing, and the INAUGURAL Springboard Opera auditions are happening soon – check out our website if you happen to be an emerging Opera Artist. Or even if you aren’t. Being purpose-built and brand new, our point-of-difference is that we have no history. So the answer “this is the way that it is done” is really of no interest to us. We are going to push the envelope, finding new audiences, supporting young Queensland, and deliver opera in ways that you have not seen before. But what is also different is the stuff that the public does not see. The corporate culture, the way that we run ourselves, the people we have. A truly innovative and C21 arts organisation is not just about the performances. It is about everything that we do and every thought that we have. Forget local authority, government or agency funding. These are either unavailable or not sustainable and can kill creativity when working within their specific guidelines. Instead, research what the local demographic want or need and provide it. Think of ways that you can entice an audience or participation within different localities and cultures. Be brave, do it alone or with like minded colleagues. Involve yourself in local festivals, fetes, fairs or the like. Hire local halls or theatres. Involve youth clubs and/or schools. Show people what you offer and educate about the impact of the arts on wellbeing and social inclusion.

I recently had a powerful realization that we are all one and that we are all connected. We all have a person within us that is a representation of our greatest power and potential. When we integrate this person into our lives, we realize that we are the opera in power and that we can experience a fullness and stability that comes with this integration. With a frightening lack of focus on the importance of an arts education the consequences will hit us for decades. Government policy needs to move swiftly and distinctly to support creative education in schools, colleges and Universities as a matter of urgency. This is not just about having ‘stories’ to tell. It is about nurturing and recognising the importance of these creative skills in business and corporate environments too. We need smart people in positions of authority and power - in all organisations. Time for change.
