We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with KORAD (Korea Radioactive Waste Agency) regarding cooperation in the field of radioactive waste management ☢ Over the past few years, Fortum has provided consultation support to KORAD on #wastemanagement and #disposal-related topics through two different assignments. The newly signed MoU facilitates and paves the way for more detailed technical support and consultation services. For Fortum's Nuclear Services this MoU represents an opportunity to strengthen collaboration with KORAD. Read more about the cooperation 👉🏻 https://lnkd.in/dgap_Ytp

Managing Spent Nuclear Fuel: What is Consent-Based Siting? Consent-based siting is an approach to siting facilities that focuses on the needs and concerns of people and communities. Communities participate in the siting process by working carefully through a series of phases and steps with the Department (as the implementing organization). Each step and phase helps a community determine whether and how hosting a facility to manage spent nuclear fuel is aligned to the community’s goals. By its nature, a consent-based siting process must be flexible, adaptive, and responsive to community concerns. Thus, the phases and steps are intended to serve as a guide, not a prescriptive set of instructions. https://lnkd.in/gvqH5vuT

China pressing ahead with reactor designs. In the UK, these things tend to take upwards of a decade to approve and never normally more than one at a time. As with so many other areas of the transition, we’re far behind. Luckily, Sizewell C’s EPR sharing arrangement with Hinkley means crucial pooling of resources, design improvements and lessons learned will be fully captured in the development of the project. New nuclear needs faster permitting and regulatory streamlining to get stuff built 👍 https://lnkd.in/eV_aK2MS

Following a decade of predicted stagnation or decline after the 2011 #Fukushima accident in #Japan, predictions for #NuclearEnergy have increased every year since 2020!!! Installed #NuclearPowerCapacity estimates for 2050 have been increased for three years in a rowr, driven by growing security of supply concerns as well as lifetime extension for nuclear units and enthusiasm for new advanced and #SmallModularReactors... It´s time to finally achieve global standardization of regulatory and industrial rules and standards, joining this with final disposals of high level radioactive waste the #NuclearIndustry will beat all the antinuclear voices that have been historically using cost and radiactive waste as arguments to put the public opinion against it. https://lnkd.in/ePGTADSy

At Nordic Nuclear Forum in Finland, Frederic Lelievre has participated to the panel discussion dedicated to Long-Term Operation and ageing management for NPP’s. He said: "We all know that Nuclear Power plant Life-Time Extensions and LTO are challenging due to components ageing, obsolescence, cables, concrete… We are facing competing needs: New Build projects and LTO initiatives are sharing the same resources, skills, competencies, industrial capacities and global supply chain. The key success factors are competencies, and robust supply chain. The drivers are Safety, Quality, Lead Time, Investments, Bringing experience from others' fleets." #Framatome #NNF2024

Yesterday, in a bipartisan vote, the Senate passed the ADVANCE Act. Jacqueline Toth, our Managing Director, reacted: "For communities that want them, nuclear power plants are a powerhouse of local economic activity. Congress sent to President Biden's desk a bill that will help more communities access nuclear energy by strengthening the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's staffing and spending; enabling the use of accident-tolerant fuels; and supporting the licensing of new reactor designs, including coal-to-nuclear projects." This headline article is copied from the US DOE, but I post it here as it provides important facts on some of the possible advantages of transitioning from coal to nuclear. It is not beyond reason that this approach could be applied here in Australia, if not for the ARPANS Act.
