The Nature Restoration Regulation is adopted and will enter into force this summer. We recognize the degradation of biodiversity as one of the largest environmental challenges globally that must be tackled - that is why it is one of our sustainability priorities. We expect increasing restoration activities in forests, marshlands and small waterbodies. Together with our own biodiversity activities in terrestrial and aquatic areas in the impact areas of power plants, they improve the quality and quantity of habitats on a larger scale and make also our own restoration actions more effective. However, the new regulation could lead to unforeseen negative consequences for the energy system. Aligning the restoration measures with existing renewable energy production and new measures to reach the climate and energy goals is essential in the implementation. We are looking forward to participating in the preparation of the restoration plans together with authorities and other stakeholders.

Developing an #ARR #carbon project can be incredibly complicated. Hopefully this infographic provides some clarity for project developers and their investors on the considerations required to successfully develop your carbon asset. #reforestbetter
Have you ever wondered what it takes to properly develop a reforestation carbon project? 🌱 Here is our view of how it should be done, and how Hamerkop Climate Impacts’ team of experts can assist project developers on that journey… 👇 Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) projects work to establish new forests or restore degraded land through tree-planting, soil conservation, and other sustainable initiatives. This important work helps address climate change, as it is a low-tech nature-based solution that sequesters carbon, promotes biodiversity, and supports local livelihoods (just to name a few of many benefits). Our Head of Advisory Services, Guy Warren, developed this blueprint to lead training sessions with project developers looking to implement #ARR carbon projects 🌍 The HAMERKOP team has been busy delivering this information around the world ✅ Let us know what you think of this blueprint! And feel free to get in touch with any questions — 👉 Enjoy this kind of content? Senior Lecturer and ARC DECRA Fellow, School of Environment & Science and Australian Rivers Institute, Griffith University, Brisbane, Queensland.
Our new paper published in Nature Sustainability unpacks considerations on how to ensure access to basic water needs under safe and just Earth system boundaries. An important highlight from the study indicates “…approximately 2.6 billion people live in river basins where groundwater is needed because they are already outside the surface water Earth system boundary...” Article is freely available. https://lnkd.in/gj5xmSzA

Amidst a (welcomed) scrutinization of the Voluntary Carbon Market it’s important to keep remembering that we cannot stand still while working on improved quality and integrity. Global CO2 levels are still rising. And virgin forests are still being cut down. So, there is not only room for growth as this S&P report states, it’s also imperative corporates act with more ambition and fill that gap.
Recommend reading this great article from S&P Global on corporate use of NbS: "Corporate support for nature-based solutions has room to grow" Here are some of the highlights: 🌱 Corporate engagement with NbS presents an untapped potential for climate action. Natural Climate Solutions (NbS which address climate change), which encompass efforts to restore, protect, and sustainably manage ecosystems, offer a multifaceted approach to addressing climate change AND biodiversity loss AND inequality. 🏭 Despite their promise, corporate investment in NbS remains limited. Few companies outside specific industries prioritize actions to regenerate or restore ecosystems. 📉 Investments in NCS are far below what's necessary, with just a fraction of the required funding originating from the private sector. Public-private partnerships could bridge this gap, fostering greater corporate engagement in NCS and bolstering climate resilience. ℹ️ Understanding ecosystem dependencies is crucial for companies to grasp the risks posed by biodiversity loss and climate change. Despite the potential benefits, many industries have yet to assess their nature dependency risks, indicating a need for greater awareness and action. 🌍 In essence, prioritizing NCS offers a win-win scenario for both businesses and the environment. By investing in NCS, companies not only mitigate their environmental impact but also enhance their resilience to climate risks. Give it a read 👇 https://lnkd.in/ePKavbmb

ASPECT Studios is pleased to announce a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to sustainability: achieving carbon neutral status. Sustainability is central to what we do – our projects support biodiversity, protect the natural world, and play a part in stimulating the change needed to tackle the climate crisis. This achievement recognises the dedication of the ASPECT team to environmental stewardship. We have successfully achieved carbon neutral status in accordance with the PAS2060 international standard. We are meeting this standard in part by funding three certified projects: a project to establish permanent native forests through assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources in New South Wales, Australia, forest management in Papua New Guinea, and greenfield wind power in India. These initiatives allow us to not only offset our carbon emissions but also contribute positively to environmental conservation and sustainable development. This certification is part of an ongoing journey. We have also developed a Carbon Reduction Plan to further reduce our carbon footprint and drive positive environmental outcomes. We always talk about going Carbon zero, about creating strategies that are more aligned with our impact on nature and the world, but what if we look at our impact from all angles? Those in charge of designing these cities, from parks to housing should take the time to read this article made by Michelle Sánchez Brajkovic. The need to go into detail, to reanalyze before destroying, to understand that everything counts: materials, waste, buildings everything is fundamental if we really want to make a change in our impact on this world. In my opinion: overpopulation is irremediable. We have invaded a world that we share with other species, without understanding that it was a shared world, not only ours. But what do we do to make this impact a positive one? What do you do every day to respect the space of others, not only humans but also animals, insects, and other species? What does your company do to have a clean conscience? #proudsister #sustainability #sustainable #architecturalhardware #sustainablebusiness #sustainabilitymatters
Our Sustainability Lead Michelle Sánchez Brajkovic writes on Dezeen about the importance of placing greater emphasis on protecting biodiversity in projects, being aware that sustainability as a concept goes beyond environmental impact. *Dear fellow citizens* Today we celebrate the World Environment Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness on the importance of protecting and preserving our planet. This year's theme, "Ecosystem Restoration," reminds us that restoring our damaged ecosystems is crucial to achieving a sustainable future. As we stand here today, we are faced with the harsh reality of climate change, pollution, deforestation, and other environmental challenges that threaten the very existence of our planet. It is time for us to take action, to take responsibility for our actions, and to make the necessary changes to protect and restore our environment. Every individual has a role to play in this journey towards a healthier planet. It starts with simple actions such as reducing our carbon footprint, conserving water, planting trees, and reducing waste. Governments and businesses also need to prioritize sustainability and implement policies and practices that protect the environment. Let us come together as a global community to restore our ecosystems, protect our natural resources, and safeguard our planet for future generations. Let us commit to making every day World Environment Day by taking actions that promote sustainability, conservation, and responsible stewardship. Thank you.
