#FormulaE is already leading the way in terms of #Sustainability, with the Global Sustainability Benchmark in Sport report identifying it as a global sustainable leader, but how can the rest of the industry learn from its leadership, and what does Formula E still need to improve on?
FE has shown that it's possible to have a more environmentally-conscious motorsport, but it's still seen as an offshoot to the much more successful #F1. I think it's time for audiences to have their perceptions of EVs in motorsports challenged, and we need to do more to put this cleaner, greener sport front and centre in the oncoming years.
What predictions do you have for the future of sustainable sports events?
"When you’re talking about sustainability, it’s probably not very sustainable, not only for the emissions but also for the human body."
These are the words of driver Max Verstappen, reflecting the concerns and challenges of the industry at large.
As the sport continues to grow and become even more international than ever before, we need to ensure that F1 continues to be both sustainable for our environment and sustainable for the drivers and crews that support them.
How do you think the industry will evolve to accommodate these changes? #Leadership#Innovation#Sustainability
As a member of the American University community, sustainability is an important part of every piece of research, every program, class, and conversation. I decided to take a look at the issue of carbon emissions in my favorite motorsport series. Formula 1 is hailed as the pinnacle of motorsport, but It also has one of the world’s largest carbon footprints. Here’s how the racing behemoth is setting itself up for a more sustainable future.

There is a lot of ground to make up if Formula One is to deliver on its high profile net zero by 2030 pledge.
That is the daunting challenge facing Alice Ashpitel, sustainability and environmental manager at leading F1 team Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team.
Read our interview with Alice Ashpitel and discover how the F1 team is working to slash transport emissions, drive the development of sustainable fuels, and hit net zero targets 👇
Net Zero, Mercedes F1 and... Coldplay?!
Alice Ashpitel, our Head of Sustainability, discussed both topics in the second part of BusinessGreen's report of their report into our ambition to be the most sustainable sports team.
“While there may be different approaches, the challenges we're facing are the same,” says Ali discussing her experiences working in sustainability across a range of sectors.
Ali referenced Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres World Tour as an inspiration to Mercedes F1 in continuing to act as pioneers in the race to Net Zero.
Our aim is to embed sustainability in every decision we make and action we take and we have worked tirelessly to change and better understand the impact we have on the world.

Is #F1 turning the corner towards more #sustainability, social justice, #inclusion and #diversity? The results of our latest study show that Formula 1 has recognised the signs of the times and will be part of the solution!
In recent years, interest in Formula 1 has never been greater, thanks in large part to the Netflix series Drive to Survive. Because of this and the sustainability goals, some new OEMs are interested in participating. However, this is not without its problems, as a new entry is no guarantee of top results.
What does that look like in concrete terms?
🏁 From 2026, the engines will have to run on fully sustainable e-fuels.
🏁 Net zero by 2030: #eFuels and leaner logistics should pave the way
🏁 New upper cost limit for vehicle development
🏁 The introduction of the F1 Academy championship in 2023 is intended to prepare women specifically for higher racing series

And in other News...
Formula E’s 2024 Race Calendar kicks off in just over 50 days in Mexico City.
For the past ten years Formula E has tried to lead sports down a more environmentally-friendly path, with a specific focus on electric vehicle technology and air quality. Unlike other sports, the racing championship has environmental sustainability baked into its founding principles, giving it credibility and a competitive advantage as climate change accelerates.
Julia Pallé - Vice President, Sustainability boasts many accomplishments, including certifying the championship against ISO 20121 (sustainable events international standard), making Formula E the first ever motorsport to receive such certification.
With climate change accelerating, other sports must now also find ways to reduce emissions and adjust to the new climate reality. For example, World Athletics is working on air quality in stadiums, and Julia believes other sports should engage more with the community to create positive environmental change. In her words, “take care of them and they will take care of the planet.”

For anyone interested in (really) fast-moving business, my first article in CNBC's "business of F1" series looks at whether the sport's global ambitions undermine the credibility of its Net Zero pledges...
🗓 Packing 24 races into ten months forces teams into the air to hit deadlines.
🌎 Structuring the calendar into 4 regional blocks will help, but it ignores the fact teams have to fly cars home for repairs regularly.
🇯🇵 It also brings politics into play. The Japanese GP has given up its traditional October date to fit in between the 🇦🇺 and 🇨🇳 GPs. Others are less accommodating.
🔧 So can the sport be Net Zero by 2030? Not through any logistical solutions, but if any industry can produce a technological miracle it's F1.
Throughout this series I'll be looking at some of the ideas that are driving F1 and where leaders can apply them to their own business. So, give me a message if there are any questions you want answering!
