This gives me chills. The CXO or Chief Exploration Officer, Suzanne Potjer with the Dutch Urban Agenda explores in the outside world, interesting people, projects and innovative collaborations to address wicked problems, transition problems, convergence of issues. When we start sharing this, build on each others efforts is when we can achieve systematic change. We know that to innovate in government we need to look and collaborate inside as well as outside, academia, industry, NGO’s. We also know that it is sometimes like walking through mud not because of the individuals in positions of authority giving or not giving approvals but because of the system that does not allow fast action or collaboration with outside. The desire to be open and collaborate is there but so are the systematic constraints. Can we get a CXO too? https://lnkd.in/eGj5Uaaj

Good to be at #UNHouseBrussels this afternoon, thanks to the Cities Alliance event on ‘How to create and finance women led green public spaces’ - with a panel discussing the challenges and best practices in the design and finance of inclusive and resilient cities. Representatives from the European Commission, EU Delegation in #Nepal, Deputy Head of Unit South and South East Asia, DG INTPA, United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), UNOPS. Discussing the workings of European development funds and investment partners to the processes and partnerships required on the ground and complexity of regional / national governments. With sharing projects on the ground from Nepal to #Tunisia on codesigning with women and communities on creating safer / greener public spaces for all. To the explanations on the EU #globalgateway initiative described as a ‘European strategy to boost smart, clean and secure links in digital, energy and transport sectors and to strengthen health, education and research systems across the world.’ As our friend, contact and former speaker at our event, from Cities Alliance , Giulia Maci pointed out - there is a lack of: gender data; awareness; capacity; awareness; funding; insuffiencient number of women in decision making positions. As we know, we need multi-stakeholders and an integrated approach to urban planning. Along with the education/skills building required for the green transition. We also need not only the infrastructural investments from the institutions, yet innovative funding solutions including those from private sector. There was much discussed and we are grateful to Cities Alliance for holding this event. Looking forward to reaching out to the organisations there for potential collaborations. #publicspace #genderequality #inclusive #sustainable #together #equity #justtransition #womenoftheneb

We’re excited to share the Scottish Cities Alliance’s 2023-2024 Annual Report! Over the past year, we’ve expanded our reach and influence, thanks to the support of city leaders, council officers, The Scottish Government, and our fantastic partners, led by Chair Cllr John Alexander. Key Highlights: 🔵 Showcasing Scotland's Cities: We’ve promoted Scotland’s eight cities on national stages, attracting capital despite economic challenges. Our efforts culminated in a Team Scotland approach at UKREiiF and our own programme in London, Scottish Cities Week, highlighting Scotland’s strengths in Data & Digital Technologies, Health & Life Sciences, Energy Transition, and Advanced Manufacturing. 🔵 Net Zero Transition: We’ve driven initiatives like the Climate Delivery Framework and Scottish Climate Intelligence to fund and manage the transition to a zero-carbon economy. These initiatives, set for approval, will support coordinated action and improve decision-making for emissions reduction, unlocking investment opportunities in the net zero pipeline. 🔵 City Centre Recovery: The Alliance provided a vital platform for discussing policy, sharing best practices, and developing solutions through our peer-to-peer network. 🔵 Smart City Achievements: We completed the £34.7 million “Scotland’s 8th City – the Smart City” program, delivering 39 projects and 96 new services. Inspired by this success, Dunfermline is developing its own Smart City Strategy. Looking ahead, we remain committed to fostering local and national collaboration, ensuring Scotland’s cities are globally competitive destinations for investment. https://lnkd.in/eYJFS-_u Scottish Enterprise Scottish Development International The Scottish National Investment Bank Department for Business and Trade UK Infrastructure Bank Connected Places Catapult Innovate UK UK Government Scotland CBRE Phoenix Group JLL Arup Legal & General Scottish Futures Trust Improvement Service Invest Glasgow Invest Aberdeen Highland Council InvestDundee Invest in Edinburgh Invest in Perth Invest in Stirling InvestFife

In our latest Cities Intelligence at Arup, Tom Bridges and I explore how the US and UK are levelling up their efforts to drive growth through innovation. Both countries have recognized the need to pair innovation alongside commercialization in order to drive growth. Through three primary pieces of legislation (BIL/IIJA, IRA, and CHIPS), the Biden administration in the US made unprecedented, widespread, yet still strategic investments in the onshoring or reshoring of key industries. The laws work together from the bottom up to incentivize both supply and demand, spark the creation of domestic supply chains, upgrade supporting infrastructure such as transportation corridors and local utility services, ensure community benefits, and drive a diverse homegrown labour force. The UK on the other hand has taken a more targetted, top down approach in the identification and development of several Innovation Districts, linking academia, think tanks, local government, and the private sector. Only time will tell how the different strategies pay off. With the size and scope of the US subsidies, you can already see growth in certain industries and regions; however, in the long run, market inefficiencies and other consequences will abound - some predictable and others totally unforeseen. On the other hand in the UK, between comparatively small size of the program and the political uncertainty leading to potentially disorganized implementation, it is not immediately clear to me that the investments will make any long lasting national impact at all (though I am eager to be proven wrong!) *** What are your thoughts on the two countries’ different approaches to growth and innovation? Any interesting lessons learned, examples, or anecdotes from other countries or regions? I’m always eager to learn of others’ perspectives and would love to hear from you! Please feel free to leave a comment or send me a message with your thoughts. ***
