Breaking Out of My Shell: Embracing Visibility for Professional Growth For a long time, my natural shyness kept me from discussing my professional achievements and the nature of my work. I've always believed in letting my work speak for itself. However, I've come to realize the power of visibility in our careers and its critical role in professional growth. My learning are encapsulated here. 1. Visibility Matters: The adage "Jo dikhta hai, woh bikta hai" (What is seen, sells) is a reminder that if we don't showcase our work, we might miss out on opportunities. Making ourselves visible is crucial. 2. Change is Essential: By not discussing our successes, we risk not achieving our full potential. Whether it's securing new projects, gaining recognition, or receiving acknowledgment, talking about our impact is necessary. 3. Sharing With Empathy: It's important to share our successes in a way that feels authentic and empathetic. This isn't about boasting, but about making genuine connections through our stories. 4. Inspire and Connect : By being open about our journeys, we not only inspire others but also forge stronger professional connections that can lead to new opportunities. There are a few things in the past 10 years of my time at Koch Industries that have been constant -- Change, Fulfillment, Growth, Opportunity (in no particular order). While some aspects of these constants have been challenging (change is often times hard, growth is often times a little painful), the LARGE majority of those constants have brought an immense amount of value to me personally and professionally. Every single tough thing has brought new opportunity, new growth and therefore new levels of fulfillment. A few things must be present to have this mindset and experience: 1. A personal focus on growth and contributing... not focusing on self, but on how you can contribute to others -- at Koch Industries we call that Contribution Motivation. 2. Being constantly curious 3. Knowing who you are and who you are not (humble confidence) 4. A workplace culture that supports growth of INDIVIDUALS - everyone is different and should be treated that way through every part of the employment lifecycle 5. Leadership Capability and Accountability 6. Ability to see the positive through the junk (perspective is powerful!) I am grateful for many leaders, coworkers, employees and friends past and present that have all helped me learn and experience these things. I aspire to be a leader that represents and drives these experiences for my team members. A bonus is nice💰, but genuine recognition makes people feel valued and invested in their role. Several years ago, a senior-level marketer reached out, eager to explore new job opportunities. What was the catalyst? Fresh from delivering a challenging but successful marketing campaign for a client, she felt disappointed when her company's leadership failed to recognize her achievement. 😞She found herself no longer happy, motivated, or valued by the work or company. The Fast Company article (linked in the comments below) shares 10 examples of how a business or boss can implement recognition. A few highlights: ✔️ Weekly verbal recognition of accomplishments. One practiced this in a group meeting. Another chose a non-public setting, in a one-on-one during lunch. ✔️ Empathy through action. An employee has a son with special needs and needed assistance getting off the bus after school. The company accommodated his schedule to work from home in the afternoons to do so. ✔️ A LinkedIn recommendation. A manager wrote a glowing recommendation after a successful marketing campaign--a public testament to her commitment. If you have any direct reports or mentees, consider expressing that their contributions do matter. The boost in confidence and general acknowledgment could be a game-changer in their engagement.

Wouldn't you know, I DID! Friday afternoon, I had a CEO of an amazing company reach out to me and asked me if I had time to chat. ME: 𝘼𝙗𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮!!!! He said he has been following my journey here on LI and wanted to talk to me about a leadership Customer Success position that he has not yet posted. 𝗛𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱!👈 We had a lovely chat, non- interview style, just two people connecting. We quickly realized that we both went to OSU #gopokes, we both have hospitality in common and we are very aligned on values and mission. He had already shared my profile with the president of the company before we chatted. I can't tell you how proud I am of myself, that in this #funemployment era, I chose to lead with authenticity, unique perspective and always advocating for myself. As the final (and busiest) weeks of the year are around the corner, I reflect on two simple quotes that impacted me most over the past few months. Ted Seburn stated, "Simplicity gets executed. Complexity gets talked about." After experiencing a few different roles this year, I believe every process can be broken down into basic steps. Find the simplest way to explain what is needed for someone to be successful. People are more receptive to information and tasks that leave no room for misinterpretation. Vanessa Rigler always says, "Enlist a partner." Whether you are starting a new project or dealing with a stressful week, find someone who motivates you and is like-minded, yet encourages new perspectives. UTILIZE them as an invaluable resource to push the business forward while becoming a better person. Thank you, Reagan Knorr, for being my partner this year. Overall, my 2023 learnings can be summarized in one sentence: The most invaluable resource in our industry is people. Be kind to those people. Good luck during the final weeks of OND!
