It's inspiring to hear the dedication and passion the Trustees bring to the table. “After careful consideration, I decided to put myself forward as a co-owner Trustee. I was initially concerned about living up to my predecessor’s legacy and meeting the expectations of my fellow co-owners. However, I feel extremely privileged to have been voted to represent my peers and appreciate their trust in me to act on their behalf. In each quarterly meeting, the transition from wearing my Procurement hat to my Trustee hat requires careful consideration. It's a skill that improves with time, prompting me to ask, 'Will this decision benefit our co-owners?' or 'Is this the best way forward for the business?'   We are fortunate to have a strong team of co-owner trustees supporting our business. Maria, with 18 months of experience, and Neil, who has been with us for nearly 20 years, bring a well-rounded balance to our group dynamic. Regular catchups between quarterly meetings allow us to stay connected and aligned. It's crucial to highlight that we are not hesitant to challenge the Leadership Team when necessary. The 3 external representatives serving on the Board of Trustees bring valuable expertise to our team. Their experience is a valuable resource for us, providing clarity and insight when needed. In turn, they rely on our day-to-day observations and reflections to stay informed about the business. This collaborative relationship ensures that we are well-informed and able to make informed decisions. I have gone to corporate holiday parties for a number of years now and what I have really learned is that all the money spent to put on the event and puff out their chests, could be handled much more quickly with an all company meeting that gave out awards and taking that expensive party money and tossing it back to employees with serious bonuses and raises. Every year companies throw these events, with varied levels of how much of a party they are or how much of a sit down dinner they are and I feel like I hear the same thing from attendees at all of them: just give us a better bonus instead of this. If you want to celebrate team success, compensate them for it. Don't waste company money to show off and then come back with meager raises or bonuses because of "cost cutting" or whatever the next excuse is.

2 years ago, I attended a meeting in London with Samuel Hurley and Antonio Wedral where NOVOS officially became an Employee Owned company. Sam and Antonio had given me the fantastic opportunity to be the Employee Representative on the new Board of Trustees at NOVOS. Not only was this a great experience in itself to see the inner workings of lawyers offices, but I was able to see first hand what a transfer of a company ownership looked like (lots and lots of legal language)! My time is now up on the Trust (it rotates), and I'm delighted to be handing over the role to Nine van Strydonck who I know will absolutely thrive in this position ⭐️ Here are the top 5 things I learnt during my experience as the employee representative: 1. I learnt what EBITDA stands for 'Earnings Before Interest Taxes Depreciation and Amortisation (this took a little while) 😅 2. I learnt how to run a People Committee within the company and worked hard to ensure every voice was heard. 3. I learnt to ask 'How does this impact the employees' when important business decisions were being made in Trust meetings. 4. I learnt how to understand the inner workings of a balance sheet, and what to look out for. 5. I attended the Employee Ownership Associations 'Representing and Developing Employee Voice' course where I had to opportunity to hear from other Employee Owned companies and how they run their own People Committees alongside what it means to be the employee representative. 6. I learnt what everybody on the People Committees top 3 ranked cereals, chocolate and crisps were (a great icebreaker). Who knew that Monster Munch would be in so many people's top 3 🤷♀️? 7. Finally, I gained so much more understanding around business decisions and why they were made. Context is everything and this really was incredibly insightful from an employees point of view. There is so much more I could put in here but it would be a very very long post.
