Nothing really great happens until we are fully committed! And once committed, we must remain 100% committed.
Always stand by your convictions. If we really care about our careers in this service business that is investment sales brokerage, integrity and credibility are critical. It's not possible to be 70% or 80% committed to integrity and credibility. The commitment must be a full 100%.
Consider Leonard Roberts, CEO of Tandy. Years ago, he was Brandweek Magazine's "Retailer of the Year" and was known as one of the top business minds in the country. He was the CEO of Arby's and turned the company around from being unprofitable to hugely profitable. When the owners threatened to cut promised bonuses for key management personnel just so the company could be more profitable, Roberts spoke out against the owner and was promptly fired for his ethical stand.
As CEO of Shoney's (another restaurant chain), he was dismayed to discover that the company was the subject of the largest racial discrimination suit in history. Believing the company was in the wrong, he promised the suit would be settled fairly. Shoney's owner agreed to settle and pay, but only if Roberts would resign. Afterwards, Roberts stated: "My stand on integrity was getting a little hard on my wife and kids. However, I know it had to be done. There was no other way. You cannot fake it. You must stand up for what is right regardless. You cannot maintain your integrity 90% and be a leader."
Our business is a simple business but it is not easy. Along the way, you will be faced with tough decisions that have to be made. If you remain 100% committed to integrity and credibility, those decisions become much easier to make.
Fully commit and great things can happen!
