Statement from Sung Poblete, PhD, RN, CEO of FARE on Mars' new campaign to increase consumption of Snickers bars on flights: "Mars is igniting a tinderbox of potential dangers for food allergy patients with its new Snickers bar campaign. An airplane already represents a heightened risk for food allergy patients, with no access to emergency care, trained medical personnel, or life-saving epinephrine autoinjectors. Added to that, flight attendants are not trained to recognize anaphylaxis, and often are unaware that a reaction is a life-threatening emergency. FARE urges Mars to abandon this campaign so that you don't further endanger the lives of the more than 33 million people in the US with the disease of food allergy. This campaign is more than tone deaf, it could potentially be deadly." Lianne Mandelbaum https://lnkd.in/eFTUQB5D

Proud to be spotlighted in this piece about flying with #foodallergies Read about my #traveltips including what resources TSA offers #travelers with #allergies and the Airline Food AIlergy Travel Survey out of Center for Food Allergy and Asthma Research (CFAAR) We must continue to file DOT complaints when warranted and there are links included in the article. As #advocates we have much still to do; importantly getting epinephrine auto-injectors on #airlines but on the flip side so much work to be proud of. Take a read and share! Patterns and prevalence of Adult Food Allergy 🥜🥛 Statistically, there is a vast number of people within the UK who are either allergic, intolerant or have celiac disease. During Food Allergy Awareness Week, we want to create awareness about the challenging intersection of food allergies and food insecurity. Food insecurity characterized by inadequate access to nutritious food or the right kinds of food due to financial constraints or limited mobility, poses significant challenges for many families. a One study reports that 21% of children with food allergies nationwide experience food insecurity. As we navigate through these complexities, it's imperative to address not only the medical aspects of food allergies but also the socio-economic factors that exacerbate the issue. By fostering understanding and collaboration, we can work towards solutions that ensure no child has to compromise their health due to lack of access to safe, nutritious food. Helping food QA teams digitize paperwork, and make our systems better with digital traceability. ..Probably rockclimbing.
Definitely expecting this to be a conversation piece for the FOOD INDUSTRY Superbowl watchers this Sunday. PREVENTING SPECIFIC ALLERGANS from entering the manufacturing chain for certain finished goods is work done by thousands and thousands of employees on a daily basis with allergan testing, allergan swabbing, sanitation scheduling and change-over lists and much more. Interesting approach to a SuperBowl advertisement. Certainly the connection is going to be readily made to illnesses and deaths caused by Allergans being in foods they shouldn't. #foodsafety #foodquality #foodindustry #correctiveactions #CAPAs #PCHF #PCQI
We are incredibly disappointed by Uber Eats use of life-threatening food allergies as humor in its Super Bowl ad. The suffering of 33M Americans with this condition is no joke. Life-threatening food allergy is a disease, not a diet. Tell Uber and National Football League (NFL) enough is enough. Awareness is key to driving change!

I just want to point out that life-threatening food allergies are not a joke nor is there anything humorous about having an anaphylactic reaction! As a mother of a toddler with multiple food allergies, "forgetting" to check the ingredients in something that may contain peanuts or tree nuts could quickly take the life of my child. It is beyond unacceptable that Uber/Uber eats would use the disease of a life-threatening food allergy as humor in their commercial, considering they are responsible for delivering and handling food. It's even more appalling that the National Football League (NFL) will allow this harmful commercial to be aired. Food allergy kids (and adults) already face major hurdles in their lives, and are often left out or excluded from many things (think cake at birthday parties, or cookies at school). Portraying food allergies as humorous is a sure way to encourage bullying among children who already excluded. According to Allergic Living, "kids with food allergies are often targeted because of their allergies. A study of youth ages 9 to 15 found that about 1 in 3 kids reported experiencing verbal and physical bullying because of their food allergies". Companies (especially ones handling food) should be raising awareness regarding food allergies and portraying inclusive and accommodating examples for our youth, instead of making fun of a condition that has taken the lives of many many people. I rarely share personal posts on LinkedIn, but having an allergy kid has fundamentally changed our lives, and repulsive commercials like this get me heated. **Update - They are pulling the peanut clip, which is great news, but it still shouldn't have been in the commercial. #foodallergyawareness #anaphylaxis #foodallergymom #FARE #inclusion National Football League (NFL) Uber Uber eats

This should not be happening. As my mother just said at dinner, "Consideration for other people has gone down the drain." We need to train the staff who interact with our customers, especially about food allergies and other dietary needs when they are responsible for preparing and serving food and beverage. They ARE your brand ambassadors and the employees who could make or break a relationship you have with guests. By not labeling food and beverages, not having your staff trained on how to administer epinephrine, or not educating your staff on the realities of food allergies, you risk losing current and potential customers (literally), losing revenue, and losing reputation. #FoodAllergies #FlightAttendants #FoodSafety #NFSEM #FoodSafetyAwareness #GuestSafety #Airlines #DeltaAirLines #CustomerService

Making this young girl pick thru another meal to show the crew the hidden nuts while in the throes of an allergic reaction. Telling her she provoked #anaphylaxis on purpose. Some of the words out of flight crews mouths make my head spin! It is my steadfast advice to never accept an airline meal no matter the assurances. Mistakes happen, recalls happen, ingredient lists are often unavailable and it is not clear what the food allergy labeling guidelines are followed in the air. Staff are also not trained in allergy cross contact. Before you judge harshly- Many folks with food allergies are NOT told to avoid airline meals by their physicians. Often travel is not discussed in medical appointments. People often find out the hard way as did this young woman. The rudeness and behavior of this Delta Air Lines #flightcrew is simply unacceptable. It is Food Allergy Week! This year’s theme is ‘When eating out: Always Ask, Always Tell’. Over 1.5 million Australians have a food allergy, and the risk of an allergic reaction increases significantly when eating away from home. Everyone needs to be allergy aware: when serving food, we need to always ask about food allergies, and people with allergies need to always tell those preparing food about their food allergy.
