I've always been fascinated by leadership's ability to inspire and motivate. This passion deepened during college when I led a small carnival team, learning that effective leadership entails more than task management—it's about prioritizing safety, simplifying complexities, and empowering teams. Not everyone wants to be a leader, but I always did. Others seem to see something in me that said to them, “this person is leadership material”. Which reminds me of the question I ask every candidate I hired that said they would like to be a leader, i.e., “When did you realize you were a leader?" Invariably they refer to being selected as the captain of a team in high school or college or a position voted upon by their peers, but I want to know, “When did someone in leadership select you to be a leader”. It’s not that you believe you are a leader, it’s when someone else who is in leadership believes you are leadership material.
Friend of Focusing Forward and Co-Founder and CEO of Kith Kin, Jill Michal, shared some big news recently, and we want to pass it along to our followers! We've been following their journey closely for a while now and we're so excited to see this tool out in the world. We highly recommend checking out the website and mobile app (and yes, we did check it out for ourselves). Several of our own team members live with multiple chronic medical conditions that each require their own arsenal of doctors, medications, follow-up visits, regular scans... and it can be a LOT to keep track of! One such team member spent some time inside the platform. She said that she was really impressed by how comprehensive it is, but still very easy to navigate. Her takeaway was that the Kith Kin resource would be enormously helpful to... well, everyone really. Whether your medical records file overflows or you simply want to stay on top of your health goals, it's worth trying it out. Grateful for this excellent book recommendation from JoAnne (Jo) Bass! We couldn't agree more with this list taken from the book "What Got You Here Won't Get You There". Humble, servant-minded leadership is one of our core values - something each of our staff members and consultants strive to embody in all our interactions, both on and off the clock. We all know what poor leadership looks like, right? Probably every one of us has had a boss at some time or another that showed us exactly the kind of leader we DON'T want to be. If we let it, this negative example can be excellent fuel for our desire to do things differently. Instead of feeling bitter about such experiences, we can try to see them as valuable lessons, hard as that may be. Does this resonate with your experience? The longer you serve and grow, the more we are driven to learn the principles on what to do when it comes to being a good leader/person…what I appreciated most from one of my favorite books (What Got You Here Won’t Get You There) is a list of things NOT to do… Whenever I’ve needed a good refresher over the years, I turn to this list. As a leader, it’s about making other people into the best version of themselves - rather than creating a carbon copy of you. This book is also a reminder to me of where we have to go as an United States Air Force. Each of our Airmen will be key to making sure we get there, and each of them are part of a winning team. Here's what's on James Neighbors 's bookshelf! 📚 The End of the World Is Just the Beginning - Mapping the Collapse of Globalization (what a mouthful!) Jim does acknowledge that it's a bit of a grim one, but he also finds it to be insightful and illuminating. From the title, you might think it would only touch on the economics of globalization, which it does, but it also explores the effects of a rapidly declining global population. The author weaves these themes together to portray a wildly different future; a future that will unwind the glory days of international trade and commerce as it's been enjoyed for the last half decade or so. He shows how this breakdown is already occurring by digging into current events such as piracy attacks on cargo routes and Putin's lust for land (which might be a cover for an even darker motive) Though this might not be your cozy new bedtime read, Jim recommends it as a "Great read". The DoD has just released the first ever National Defense Industrial Strategy (which you can read and download via this article), signaling greater potential for federal acquisition reform and for the implementation of commercially-produced industrial capabilities. With their stated resolve to invest in innovative tech, science, and manufacturing capabilities produced by small and medium-sized businesses, it appears that we could be seeing some big shifts in the federal marketplace very soon.
