Delving into 'It Worked for Me: In Life and Leadership' by Colin Powell has been this month's highlight. The book is a masterclass in leadership, delivered with unparalleled clarity, conciseness, and a humbling dose of humor. Powell's life, from his beginnings to his tenure as Secretary of State, unfolds in stories that bring us closer to a man who, despite his towering achievements, remains profoundly grounded. His wisdom, distilled from vast military and personal experiences, is presented through life rules that hit home. Notably, 'The day you stop solving problems is the day you stop leading,' 'It is always we' in the face of success, and the imperative to 'Be decisive,' have particularly resonated with me. As a young leader in the military, a husband, and a father, these principles have now given me a newfound guideline in my personal and professional growth. Powell's insights are invaluable, not just for those in the military, but for anyone in or aspiring to leadership roles. An essential read that I only wish I'd encountered sooner.

In Memoriam: Leadership rules, Colin Powell (1937-2021) Good rules to live by, from a great statesman and soldier! (See https://lnkd.in/dBrEHgne.) 1. It ain't as bad as you think. It will look better in the morning. 2. Get mad, then get over it. 3. Avoid having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it. 4. It can be done! 5. Be careful what you choose. You may get it. 6. Don't let adverse facts stand in the way of a good decision. 7. You can't make someone else's choices. You shouldn't let someone else make yours. 8. Check small things. 9. Share credit. 10. Remain calm. Be kind. 11. Have a vision. Be demanding. 12. Don't take counsel of your fears or naysayers. 13. Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier. "To the left of that list was an aphorism not for public consumption that the Chairman had written out by hand on a piece of paper: ‘SOMETIMES BEING RESPONSIBLE MEANS PISSING PEOPLE OFF.’ There was yet another axiom that Powell tried to live by, especially in his professional life. He occasionally confided it, but it wasn't written down. Powell didn't need to remind himself of that one: ‘You never know what you can get away with, unless you try.” From Woodward, Bob. 1991. The Commanders. New York: Pocket Books / Simon and Schuster Inc. p. 173.

Accountability starts with you. George Washington, the first President of the United States of America, whose birthday happens to be today, knew this for sure. Here’s a quick story in his honor: One day during the American Revolutionary War, General Washington rode up to a group of soldiers attempting to raise a massive oak beam high above the ground. The corporal in charge was shouting encouragement, but the soldiers just couldn’t get the beam into position. Washington asked the corporal why he didn’t help. “Don’t you realize that I am the corporal?” he replied. Very politely, General Washington responded, “I beg your pardon, Mr. Corporal, I do.” Washington then dismounted his horse and joined the soldiers himself, helping to hoist the beam. When they finished, he said, “If you should need help again, call on Washington, your commander-in-chief, and I will come.” Like General Washington, the most effective leaders I’ve met lead by example and walk their own talk; they’re accountable. So, ask yourself, “Am I leading by example?” But don’t take your own word for it! Also check in with a coach, a mastermind group, or a trusted colleague to determine whether you’re truly walking your own talk as a leader. #Accountability #Leadership #LeadByExample #GeorgeWashington
