AI and photography represent significant technological advancements within society, that shape our relationship with reality and truth. In the larger conversation around AI images, it is important to raise critical questions about authorship, originality, and the role of the artist in the creative act. However, when used as an artistic tool these technologies also expand the boundaries of what is possible and spark interesting debates about what 'art' means in the first place and what it's role in society is. 🏖 If you were on holiday these last few weeks, you may have missed one of my favorite articles about #AI. Everyone is a bit worried that AI is going to kill their jobs, the job market, creativity and more. But I see this AI revolution as something humanity has already experienced in the past with the rise of photography. The way painting and painters reacted is very similar to how we are behaving today and it’s interesting to learn from the past so we can be better prepared for what’s coming next https://hubs.li/Q01-Qc0g0

For all of the AI art debates, this story has been my favorite as of late. The 1839 Color Photography Competition has many categories… the AI category being the only one which is not camera based. Photographer Miles Astray decided to enter a real photo he shot of a flamingo into the AI category. He was ultimately disqualified, but only after coming in third and winning the People’s Vote Award! “AI-generated content is such a big topic right now, especially among creatives,” Astray said. “There is an important public debate about the benefits and pitfalls of this game-changing technology that I wanted to contribute to. I’m glad to see that this experiment confirmed my hypothesis: there is nothing more fantastic and creative than Mother Nature herself.” Ultimately, it feels a bit strange to include such a category in a photography competition, doesn’t it? Where does AI, prompt based, art belong? As merely a tool for us creatives to extend a shoulder, add some trees, or fill out the background of a warehouse? Some of the imagery produced by generators such as Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and DALL-E are surreal, beautiful, disturbing, hilarious and visually challenging. Surely it merits some distinction given the very human nudging that develops it? A very interesting time we get to live in as we witness the development and shifting of our newest visual paradigms. Either way, the debate rages on…

Can you believe this is an #AI-generated image? The latest #generativeai models like #DALLΕ2 and #midjourney are creating eerily realistic synthetic media that challenge photography. Are people able to distinguish between an AI-generated image and one captured with a camera? What impact will this have on their confidence in photography as a medium of visual storytelling? Should we be excited, cautious, or both about the rise of #aiart? #ethics #futureofai #artificialintelligence https://lnkd.in/eFnNaUDh Evangelia Bournousouzi
