The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development states that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are integrated and indivisible and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development (economic, social, and environmental). The interlinkages and integrated nature of the SDGs are of crucial importance in ensuring that the purpose of the new Agenda is realized. Accordingly, the integrated and interlinked nature of the SDGs needs to inform and guide their mainstreaming into national planning frameworks, in the form of national development plans or sustainable development strategies. The transformational vision of the 2030 Agenda depends on such an integrated approach, which involves identifying possible synergies and trade-offs between SDGs and their associated targets, as well as developing context specific integrated approaches to ensure effective implementation. Every country needs to determine, for itself, how best to approach the preparation and implementation of its national sustainable development strategy depending upon the prevailing political, historical cultural, ecological circumstances. A "blueprint" approach for national sustainable development strategies is neither possible nor desirable. The particular label applied to a national sustainable development strategy is not important, as long as the underlying principles characterizing a national sustainable development strategy are adhered to and that economic, social and environmental objectives are balanced and integrated. Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) have long struggled to make their voices heard when it comes to protecting their lands and their rights. There may be an #indigenouspeoplesday (9 August) in recognition of Indigenous Peoples around the world, but IPLCs remain at the fringes of international multi-stakeholder discussions, including those attempting to address the #climate and #nature crises. My feature this week considers the extent to which investors and companies across the #agrifood sector are incorporating Indigenous rights into their assessments of risks and, crucially, their engagements on sustainable solutions in a low-carbon world. Fellows’ Impact on UNSDGs in relation to Aotearoa NZ - 2022/23 EHF Fellows and their projects are having positive environmental, economic and social impact with and for Aotearoa NZ, as highlighted by recent impact findings. Fellows rated which of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) their projects have had or will have the strongest positive impact for Aotearoa NZ, revealing these top six, with ‘Climate Action’ at the top, followed closely by ‘Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure’, and ‘Decent Work and Economic Growth’. The UNSDGs provide an important and influential framing for many Fellows, as the goals represent a call for urgent action and global partnership. Collaboration and support is the focus of the Fellow-led Climate and Nature Action Group, where Fellows have united with a shared commitment to environmental sustainability, not only for Aotearoa NZ but around the globe.

It was a pleasure meeting Her Excellency, the Governor of the Cayman Islands Jane Owen, last Thursday as a Sustainable Cayman Ambassador and Protect Our Future representative. The topics of conversation included biodiversity loss, Central Mangrove Wetland conservation, and innovative food security opportunities, and I presented the future of the renewable energy sector. The experience proved to be highly insightful to me, and some key takeaways from listening to the Governor's responses included: 1. There needs to be an emphasis on open communication between Caymanian residents and members of the CI Government. - As innovators, advocacy leaders, young professionals, and the future of Cayman, our concerns are not just important, they are crucial. We have the potential to shape the future of our country, and it's essential that our voices are heard by the policymakers and decision-makers of Cayman's development. 2. Having a vote is not just a right, it's a responsibility. It's essential for creating the change we want to see in our country. However, we are currently not seeing enough of the Caymanian youth taking up this responsibility by registering to vote. - As a democracy, we have the potential to shift the course of our future development - starting with casting a vote. 3. A stronger bridge between the values of the UK Government and that of its Overseas Territory is yet to be formed. - As the newly elected UK Labour Government has vowed in its Manifesto to become a global green energy superpower, I would like to see more emphasis on achieving our National Energy Policy (which in 2023 had only reached 3% of its "100% renewable energy by 2045" goal). I left the meeting feeling energized with the knowledge that the Governor is open to hearing our thoughts, and that there is a possibility for Her Excellency to be the mouthpiece connecting our concerns and solutions to members of the CI Government.

This is a great example of showing clearly and simply why sustainability issues need to be considered as core, how they link to business criticality and how sustainability can also be part of the solution. We just need to re-create this for other key category areas. Well done all involved.
