Upstream Ag Professional - The Big Three for the Week of October 29th 2023
◼︎◼︎◼︎
Upstream Ag Professional members will get exclusive access to insights and analysis surrounding the following topics this Sunday:
1. Pivot Bio Realigned Resource Allocation
This week Pivot Bio CEO Chris Abbott shared a letter talking about changes in resource allocation, including company layoffs, along with a refocus on the company's near-term priorities.
This news comes just a week after AgBiome shared their need to potentially lay off the entire company.
What does it mean for their business? Where are they focusing their efforts? Does it make sense?
2. FMC Corporation Provides Adjustment to Expectations Is Blue Orca Capital Right?
FMC adjusts Q3 and FY 2023 expectations and updates the market at a time when management transparency is being called into question.
FMC has a significant short position against it, with the short sellers, Blue Orca Capital, calling into question the transparency of management regarding legal defeats surrounding their diamide product portfolio, two active ingredients which make up 36% of FMC sales and 28% of their patent portfolio.
Notably, one of the callouts from the Blue Orca Report was surrounding Brazil, the geography causing the most significant headwinds for FMC due to more challenging destocking headwinds than anticipated. Brazil is FMC's largest geography by revenue.
3. The Patronage Conundrum of Co-operatives
Co-operatives often lead conversations and messaging with the amount of patronage they have delivered to their members.
I believe in an ag retail context, this constant messaging anchors farmers to price and takes away from value-added conversations.
There are plenty of opportunities to emphasize investment into helping farmers grow their crops, save time, and derive a better purchasing experience.
