Plot-twist: There is no line, or it is dotted. This has been a soap box for me for a while now. I believe that the days of pure relationship sellers, with no technical chops, are largely over for B2B tech sales. I also believe that the best SE/SA/Presales folks have a solid understanding of sales fundamentals, can and should qualify deals, know what to say and what not to say, etc. When I started as a presales resource over 20 years ago, our goal was to be slightly more technically advanced than our target customers. Today, this is the baseline that we expect our AEs to accomplish and we ask the presales resources to be qualified as delivery consultants. Every high-performing individual team finds their own blend of commercial and technical balance. Additionally, every underperforming team has major gaps in this blend and likely struggles consistently in the same stage of a sales cycle.
