It's not every day that a lawn care salesman becomes the sales manager of a manufacturing company. Yet, here I am. My journey? Anything but ordinary. I married into the Ramos family, where a strict 'no family in business' policy meant my path to ARK Ramos was anything but direct. I aimed for a business degree, excelled in lawn care sales, and even bought and sold a successful franchise with my wife, Courtney. When fatherhood called, I embraced being a stay-at-home dad, squeezing in contract sales for A.R.K. Ramos on the side. My transition from the lawn to the sales floor wasn't planned. The dachshund is known by various names like wiener, badger, snag dog, Schnitzel Von Krumm and sausage dog. They are a short-legged, hound-type breed bred for hunting. They possess keen listening skills, a loud bark, a sharp eye and a fearless nature, always ready to protect their turf. (You don't need a doorbell.) In business development, mirroring the dachshund's qualities is crucial: staying present, observing, smelling, listening, bringing new opportunities back to its owner and nurturing existing clients with love and affection. My past dasher, Coco Pops (RIP), wanted to have a crack at two Great Danes one day. It wasn't very comfortable, but it reminded me that many salespeople won't target big accounts. Accounts that could make a significant impact on your performance and results. Is it because of a lack of confidence? Maybe they don't want to annoy their major competitor. Or do they don't know where to start or what to say? They need a sales process with a strategy to break dirt. To get started and get commitments with a compelling reason for change with a decision maker. And to be fair, many salespeople have never had practical training or development. But why not? Keep knocking… while in college I spent a summer selling pest control door to door for Aptive. Brutal, but it built a backbone and foundations for sales for me. Some times you have to knock the same door more than once… yes I was that guy, maybe still am. 🤪 All our sales reps on our team have spent a summer knocking doors… if you can get through that, you can sling some air fresheners. This week has been unique. I saw this Aptive truck while in North Carolina meeting with the Energizer team to discuss future projects and our plans to work more in depth together over the coming months. We were accepted into the N1 Buying group where we had previously been denied. Took 2 and half years but we are in. I feel more stressed than ever before in this season, but goodness I couldn’t have dreamed of being where we are. If you want to build a background in sales, go knock some doors. On the other side, when someone knocks on your door next time offer them some ice water and a snack. Keep knocking… #door2doorsales #aptive #enterpreneurship #businessowner #sales
