Something I’ve been chewing on lately as I attend various public events and conferences…Confident speakers aren’t always the best people to moderate panels.
Panel hosts! It’s your job to be engaging, yes, but you shouldn’t be the star of the show. You have the delicate job of balancing the conversation, making it flow organically by responding with the right level of personal input, but your focus should be on ensuring that your expert panellists have equal time to weigh in and speak up. People are there to see them speak - let them speak!
Too often I see hosts who:
- Dominate the conversation
- Ramble
- Allow one or two panellists to dominate, and don’t give voice to other panellists who may not want to interrupt
- Jump straight into questions with no natural flow or engagement
- Don’t leave time for questions
Think about your audience. What have they come to see? What will they value most? What will keep them engaged?
Just a little something to think about.
Best wishes, from someone who has hosted, participated in, and watched, MANY panels.
