Happy American Independence Day. Some celebrate with fireworks, barbecues, and family gatherings, while others stay at home. Whatever your plans, it’s likely that your dog will need extra care to cope with July 4th celebrations. Tips for Keeping Your Dog Safe and Calm: • Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet, comfortable area where your dog can retreat from the noise and commotion (see last month’s Training Tidbit).. • Stay Calm and Reassuring: Your dog takes cues from you, so staying calm and comforting can help ease their anxiety. • Avoid Fireworks: Keep your dog indoors during fireworks displays to prevent them from getting scared and running away. • Identification: Check that your dog has up-to-date identification tags and is microchipped, just in case they get frightened and run off. • Exercise Earlier: Give your dog plenty of exercise earlier in the day to help them relax in the evening. • Distract and Soothe: Use toys, chews, or calming music to distract and soothe your dog during loud events. • Add white noise such as fans and air conditioning units, as well as white noise generating apps, and turn on TV or radio for additional masking sound. Let's make this July 4th enjoyable and stress-free for everyone, two-legged and four. CHRISTMAS SELF-CARE TIP Try to avoid arguments. Christmas fallouts can be all too common, but if you feel one coming on, remind yourself that it’s meant to be a peaceful time of year, think about the bigger picture, and accept that it’s ok to have a difference of opinion.

🎆 Happy 4th of July, everyone! 🇺🇸 As we celebrate our nation’s independence, here are some tips to ensure a fun and safe weekend for our special needs kiddos: 1. Prep for Noise - 🎧 Keep noise-cancelling headphones handy to help your child cope with the loud fireworks and festivities. 2. Safety First - 🌟 Ensure your child wears an ID bracelet and keep emergency contacts updated. Crowds can be overwhelming and confusing. 3. Comfort Zone - 🧩 Bring along familiar items that can help soothe your child if they feel overwhelmed, like a favorite toy or a weighted blanket. 4. Plan Breaks - ⏲️ Schedule regular downtime to rest and recharge, away from the hustle and bustle. 5. Stay Hydrated - 💧 Keep plenty of water on hand to avoid dehydration in the summer heat. Let’s make this 4th of July enjoyable for everyone! Share your own tips and how you’re celebrating today! 🌟🎇 #SpecialNeedsParenting #4thOfJuly2024 #InclusiveCelebration #FamilyFun
