I posted a little experiment on Monday trying to leverage $20 I was given for weed whacking my 80-year-old neighbor Darlene’s irrigation ditch into a larger donation for nonprofits.
Woot – woot – here’s the result: We turned that lonely Andrew Jackson ($20) into commitments for donations totaling $1,150 – that’s > 50x increase, friends! 🎉
I asked people to nominate nonprofits. The donation categories suggested generally fell into two broad groups: local to Darlene (which means Idaho) or Maui. For Idaho, there were a lot of candidates. For Maui, three were suggested: Hawaiian Community Foundation, Maui Food Bank, and Red Cross of Hawaii. I put all the candidates into an online random drawing generator, and it selected the Boise Period Project and Hawaii Red Cross. I think we all get what the Red Cross does – the Boise Period Project gathers menstrual products to create free period packs for those experiencing period poverty. Two worthy causes!
Now for the nitty gritty.
Some of you gave me funds via Venmo:
Cory Grabow Yung Thuy-Dung S. Karen Rush-Wilson Michelle Bushneff Elise Allyn Stephanie Robbins Lisa Arie Elizabeth Friend Erik Kingston, PCED Jay Story Jeremy Oliver Pete Gombert Randye S S. Don Bush Lee Denton Dixon Jeremy Kaplan. Hopefully I’m not missing anyone there – if so, let me know! 💪
Oh, and Scott Beecham dropped off cash at my desk. Rick S., I think you’re mailing yours to me, right? And Holly Cook went straight to the source and donated directly to nonprofit Jesse Tree.
I will use the Venmo funds to make donations 50/50 to the Red Cross Hawaii or to the Boise Period Project, unless you specifically designated nonprofits for your contribution. I will make those directly as well.
The rest of you fantastic humans committed to give via a comment on the post – I’ll kick in! – so we’re on the honor system here: You can make your donation to the Boise Period Project or to the Red Cross of Hawaii (links are at the bottom of this post). Of course, you can always make your donation to any fantastic nonprofit you’d like – the key here is to make that donation! I’ll recognize you in a comment to this post since there are so many of you!
Again, if I’ve missed recognizing anyone here, please let me know!
There were a lot of likes on the post as well. If the spirit moves any of you who liked what we were doing, go ahead and throw down a donation to your fave nonprofit – they deserve it!
This was a lot of fun. As one contributor, Tara Wolfson, said, “This gives me energy.” Me, too, Tara – me, too.
Thank you all! 🙏
