What does a producer do? I get that question all the time when talking about my experience. The short answer is producers get sh*t done! A longer answer are the steps below: 💡Creative ideation & “The Big Picture.” Meeting with the director or client to make sure the overall creative is aligned. 💸Budgeting (and staying under budget). Making sure the budget and creative are aligned to guarantee a smooth production process. Don’t promise the world if you have a small budget. 📅Timeline & Deadlines. “We need this by EOD!” Forecasting and planning a realistic and accurate timeline with all parties. While making sure the deliverables are ready days before the final deadline. Providing accurate updates are also crucial. 🍿🎬Overseeing the entire project from a kernel of an idea to the final cut of the project. Many random fires will come up and you have to have a cool head. Being able to delegate with confidence is key! I’m learning this every day. Lastly this is the best part. Touching each part of the process is my favorite part. I’d love to make dope sh*t with you! It’s not uncommon for web agencies to employ content reuse strategies to streamline their workflow and maintain consistency across multiple client projects. Content reuse is the practice of using the same content in multiple places, such as using a common topic in different user guides or the same warning message in various topics. This approach can save time and create more consistent technical publications. However, it’s important to differentiate between content reuse and outright copying. Reuse involves creating content once and making it available for use in additional channels and publications, often with adjustments to fit each unique context. When the source content is updated, the changes are reflected everywhere that content is reused. In contrast, copying content from one client to another without modification or permission can lead to plagiarism and copyright infringement issues. Agencies should be careful to avoid duplicating content between clients and sites, adhering to the “Don’t Repeat Yourself” (DRY) principle to save time and effort while ensuring each client’s content remains unique and tailored to their needs. When a website is given to a client, it becomes the client's intellectual property. If an agency copies the content from one client to another, this is plagiarism, the same way as if you copied your own work when submitting a University assignment. Copying content between clients and other websites has many factors that can hinder the client's success. SEO becomes duplicate content. When customers browse websites and land on both clients' websites, These clients are considered competitors. This is a conflict of interest. There is limited differentiation between clients. Agencies cannot completely invest in two clients in the same industry. Copying content becomes a legal issue, as the agency that has copied is now causing a loss of income to the business it has copied from. Ultimately, while content reuse is a legitimate and efficient practice when done correctly, it must be managed carefully to respect intellectual property rights and provide genuine value to each client. The thing I've found with video production over the years is that it has a perception where it is either seen as exceedingly expensive or incredibly cheap - there never seems to be any in-between 🙃 I've had conversations with prospects who've enquired about producing a video on a £150 budget, whilst I've also spoken to relatively big businesses who don't even consider video as an option because they assume it'll be be in the tens of thousands 🤑 In reality, video can be as expensive as you want it to be. Does that mean you can have a promotional video made on a shoestring budget? 🤔 Probably, but it's likely not going to be something that will represent your business in the best possible way! That said, the main reason why I started FOSTER Studios was because I wanted to be agile and offer a professional service at a realistic price point for both big and small businesses without the quality being impacted. Obviously being a one-man-band a lot of the time means I can have that flexibility, and it doesn't mean I say yes to work below what I'm comfortable charging, but it does bring me a lot of satisfaction being able to work with tiny independent businesses all the way up to blue chip organisations - I can't think of many other service providers that offer that! There is a very fine line between cost-effectiveness and quality, but being able to provide professional content at a rate that is opportunistic for businesses of all sizes will stand you in good stead to working with a huge variety of enterprises (if that's what you want to do) 🎥 If you've just started out in your video production journey and want to have a chat, feel free to drop me a message anytime ☺️

A Day in the Life of a Creative Producer 🎥 No two days are the same for me, but here's a glimpse into my day: 🕒 8.00AM - Rise and Shine: The early morning starts with a cup of inspiration (coffee!) and a quick look at the latest industry news. It's all about staying ahead of trends and gathering fresh ideas. 📝 10.00 AM - Planning Magic: The day kicks off with a creative brainstorming session. I collaborate with writers, directors, and designers to shape compelling narratives. Crafting a vision is like painting a canvas. 🎬 10:30 AM - Production Hustle: On set, it's all hands on deck. I wear multiple hats - problem-solver, motivator, and visionary. Bringing a script to life is a collective effort, and I thrive on the chaos and creativity. 📊 1:00 PM - Budgets & Pitches: After a quick lunch, it's time to dive into budget meetings and pitch sessions. Crafting compelling proposals is an art in itself. It's all about convincing stakeholders that our project is worth the investment. 💡 3:00 PM - Post-Production Play: Editing, sound design, and post-production are where the magic happens. Guiding the team through this phase is like sculpting a masterpiece. Every cut, every sound, and every frame matters. 🌟 5:30 PM - Celebrating Victories: Acknowledging accomplishments, whether it's wrapping up a successful shoot or securing a new project, is essential. It's a chance to applaud the team's hard work. 🌆 7:00 PM - Networking & Learning: The evening often involves industry events, meetings, and mingling. Staying connected with the creative community and learning from peers is vital. 🌙 10:00 PM - Reflection Time: Before bedtime, I reflect on the day. The journey of a creative producer is demanding, but the thrill of seeing ideas come to life is worth every moment. 🙌 For me, it's not just a job; it's also a passion. Uncertainty is bad for business. As creatives we're not just selling pretty pictures, or our flashy camera kit - we're offering a solution to a problem. The more uncertainty about that solution, the harder it's going to be to put real money on the line for it. 🎥 This is something I think is missing from a lot of conversations around professions like video production. Recently I've seen some big debates on LinkedIn about whether companies should specialise or focus on a specific niche, And while it's true a lot of the skills as a producer are totally transferable, I've absolutely found some real benefit to working with clients in science, tech and university sectors for 99% of the work we do. Often it's as simple as knowing we're all speaking the same language right at the earliest briefing stage - especially for clients who haven't had much experience commissioning things like video work before. A university client told me on a call last week that they were reassured by how much Wavelength Studio works in the HE sector 👨🎓 Now that doesn't mean that producers can get complacent or lazy, it doesn't mean we can take shortcuts and rely on cliches. If anything, the more I work in the same sectors, the more I want to push for fresh ideas and different kinds of content! But I've absolutely noticed that familiarity can reduce that feeling of uncertainty. And often that's the thing our clients really want to know - not which film school we attended, and certainly not which camera we're using! 😁 Where are you on the niche or not-niche debate?
