In this week’s Freight Market Update, equipment shortages and port congestion in Asia are beginning to improve, though still fall short of meeting current demand. Blank sailings are expected in July and August on Far East Westbound (FEWB) trade lanes. In the Mediterranean, carrier utilization has reached 100%, driving up rates for both West and East Mediterranean routes in July. Global air cargo tonnage dropped 5% (June 17-23, 2024), but rates rose 1% to $2.54/kg—10% higher than last year, and 43% higher than pre-COVID levels. Amid ongoing Red Sea disruptions, shippers continue to juggle a growing list of concerns. “We’re almost right back where we were at the peak of COVID,” Flexport CEO Ryan Petersen told Bloomberg Television. “Back then, people got very emotional [about freight rate surges and breaches of contract]. When the same things happen now, they remember.” Ryan also discussed: • Ocean shipping capacity through 2026, and the resulting impact on pricing • How technology can help shippers circumvent delays during the peak season rush • How an International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) strike could upend supply chains nationwide Watch the full interview here → https://flx.to/BT

Between soaring ocean rates, port congestion, and labor union negotiations, air freight volumes have surged through an unusually busy summer, suggesting the pull-forward of an early peak season. But the air market comes with its own capacity challenges. FreightWaves breaks it down: https://flx.to/air And retailers across the board are shipping early via water *and* air, all while juggling rapid inventory pivots. Why? Higher-than-expected sales increases, according to nearly half of respondents to a recent Flexport webinar poll. Watch the full Freight Market Update Live webinar for more: https://lnkd.in/epD_4fBH

As ocean rates near a two-year high, how can shippers navigate increasingly turbulent waters? The answer: it’s complicated. “The decision to ship is inelastic,” says Nathan Strang, Flexport’s Director of Ocean Freight. “[Businesses] need to ship their goods to get them to market, and then face the choice of passing through that cost to the end-consumer, or absorbing the cost against their revenue.” Read the rest here → https://flx.to/costs
