Yesterday, our FLEX/design team visited the eye-opening 'Food for Thought' exhibition at the Het Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam. We immersed ourselves into the world of global food production 🌱, showcased by Kadir Van Lohuizen and we gained valuable insights into the Dutch role in this ecosystem. In this exploration, we collected several compelling directions for creating impactful design: 💡 Minimizing Climate Impact: Engaging in thoughtful discourse on strategies to minimize the climate impact of our food system, exploring sustainable practices and innovations. How can we design less impactful logistic solutions and packagings that are both super convenient and fully re-usable. And how can we encourage consumers to chose for local alternatives by providing the right information on the packaging, shelves and overall customer journey in retail? 💡 Maximizing Social Impact: Exploring ways to extend the positive effects of our design beyond borders, ensuring fair wages for those involved in food production globally and encouraging sustainable consumption practices. 1/3rd of all our food is thrown away (wow!). How can we encourage our clients and consumers to be more aware and feel responsible about this? and; How can we design (dispense) solutions that let you only buy and consume what you need? 💡 Design Reflection: Provoking introspection among our team — should we, as designers, reconsider certain creations to align with a more sustainable and ethical approach? How can we measure both environmental and social impact in early stages of our design projects? These thought-provoking discussions are paving the way for FLEX/design this year to create solutions that not only elevate design standards but also maximize social impact, contributing to a more equitable, eco-friendly future! 🌿🚛 #FoodForThought #Sustainability #DesignInnovation Stay tuned for more! 📢

'How are we doing with sustainability and circularity in the Danish design industry?' That was the question posed during #3daysofdesign last week and debated between the five talented designers in the 5th edition of the show ´Danmarks næste klassiker', designers and judges in the program Kasper Salto and Pil Bredahl, and editor-in-chief Thomas Velling who explained why the program is important to show in Danish prime time TV! Our host was THE UPCYCL a platform circulating industrial cut offs that delivered a number of materials to the program this season. 💚 The answer? We are not doing really well - yet. We had an interesting debate on who should take an initiative - first? The legislators, the large design companies, the educational institutions, the consumers or? Is it the end product or the material that comes first in the deign proces? And how do upcycled materials age? Which materials can we use with lower footprints? Where do we have our customers, us / me - the consumers? We need to challenge current aestetics. As Pil said in one of the programs: the new norm must be that a product is beautilful when we know that it has been produced in a proper way with a low CO2 footprint, and can last for a long time! Conclusion - we are at the very beginning of pursuing sustainability and circularity in the industry! and it is a complex industry to change. BUT the Danish design industry has changed the world before - so why not again? On that note, thank you for your thoughts and efforts on a daily basis!

Modular design - can brands design with circularity in mind? We asked thought leaders from three of our most forward-thinking sustainable clients to give us their views as part of our second Little Red Rooster Session at this year’s Summer Showcase. Step forward David Woollcott, CEO, King Living, Aron Jahn, marketing communications lead at Framery and Keplinger Roland, design director, at Silhouette Group who joined us as panellists for the session. The talk was moderated by Roddy Clarke, design writer, speaker and consultant, who focuses his work on the positive social and environmental impacts design can have, while drawing on his own passion for craft and creativity. Some of the topics that were discussed include: ⏺️ Be clear on your core design principles ⏺️ Focus on reducing waste ⏺️ Consider the life cycle of products ⏺️ Sustainable does not need to mean expensive ⏺️ Classic design and sustainability go hand in hand Find out more about the engaging discussion here: https://lnkd.in/eixbbgvh #LittleRedRooster #ThoughtLeadership #KingLiving #Framery #Silhouette #Sustainablity #PRPRPR

Embracing Contradictions: Design & Sustainability Can Tango Ever been to a dance where design and sustainability step on each other's toes? I just read an article that's like a rhythm lesson for those two. See, Steve Wardle, the design operations guy from Kellanova, and Rachel Sheldon, the eco-hero over at her company, shared the floor to talk about how to mesh good looks with being good to the planet. And here's the kicker: "Sustainability needs to be woven into the fabric of design, not just patched on like a last-minute accessory." 💡 That's my jam! At Supergay Spirits, we get it. Our bottles aren't just a pretty face—they're like a high five to Mother Earth. Reading the room, we make choices that don't just look good on paper, but also make sense in the grand scheme of things. And, hey, it's not about following the herd—it's about carving out our own dance moves. Feeling out of step? ❤️ Product Designers. This unique set of creatives hold an essential key to our transition from a linear economy to a circular economy. Linear economy = single-use that leads to a #RaceToTheBottom in the construction world (accountable for 40% of all waste globally), with #NoValue left for any stakeholder. Circular economy = reuse of materials that leads to a more efficient build sector, where value is kept in our society, resulting in #HappyShareholders and #Positive social impact. Circular sounds great, doesn't it? But building a circular economy is extremely hard to do right. Sometimes, it feels like catching rockets out of the sky with chopsticks. And just like those rockets - once the #Engineers figure it out - the world is in awe. To then take it for granted and enjoy the benefits forever 🙂 Last year at JUUNOO, we won the Henry Van de Velde Ecodesign Award by OVAM. This is like winning the Oscars for product designers—an amazing experience that celebrated the extraordinary commitment of our product development team. So now I'm happy that I can repay this great honor by inspiring the next generation of Product Designers and sharing some of our key insights. During the keynote, I'll share concrete insights about: 1️⃣ Why #CircularValuable Product design is the secret ingredient to success. 2️⃣ How to #Measure Circular Value. 3️⃣ What to do to make a Circular Valuable product and unlock new #BusinessModels. Feel free to join in on November the 21st. If you can't wait to learn more about this topic - feel free to already take a deep dive with the Circular Value Institute: https://lnkd.in/eiKew64E Thank you OVAM and Circular Flanders for inviting me!

We love sustainable and circular product design here at Litmus Sustainability. But how do you apply those methods in packaging? Yesterday, we had the privilege of guiding a range of businesses through a facilitated workshop on how to do just that. We had a blast! 🌿 What is a Circular Economy? 🌿 Together, we delved into the essence of a circular economy, simplifying its core principles and demonstrating that circular and sustainable business is so much more than a compliance issue, but an opportunity for businesses to do remarkable things. 💡 Unlocking the Potential of Purposeful Design 💡 We dove deep into the core components of circular and purposeful design, empowering participants to reimagine possibilities and rethink conventional approaches to packaging. We did this by delving deeper into the principles of circular design, and via an exploration of some emerging and innovative trends happening in packaging and other parts of the value chain. 🔄 Applying Circular Principles in Action 🔄 Finally, we brought everything together to identify opportunities for interventions in an existing product and explored the role of packaging in supporting a circular economy across a product's lifecycle. It is always so inspiring to see what amazing things come out of these sessions. It feels like we get million pound ideas every time we do them! Thank you to DuoUK and Zoe Brimelow for hosting this event and for inviting us to be a part of it. Duo are doing some absolutely remarkable things in the packaging space and are a must-connect with business for anyone seeking out a packaging supplier. #CircularEconomy #SustainableDesign #DesignforPlanet

In the contemporary product development landscape, sustainability must be a guiding principle that shapes the foundation of innovation. I acknowledge and value the crucial role of product designers in this journey. They are responsible for creating aesthetically pleasing and functional packaging, ensuring that every design step aligns with our sustainability commitment. Our product design department, therefore, stands at the forefront, not just as creators of visually compelling packages but as champions of environmental stewardship. Sustainability goes beyond regulations; it's about rethinking product lifecycles. As the Ellen MacArthur Foundation defines, the circular economy ensures materials never become waste but are continually reused, recycled, or composted. This approach tackles global challenges like climate change and waste. The circular economy hinges on three principles driven by design: 1. Eliminate waste and pollution: Products should be designed for continuous reuse or recycling, shifting from a cradle-to-grave model to a circular one. 2. Circulate products and materials: Designers focus on disassembly and material recovery, minimizing resource depletion and waste generation. 3. Regenerate nature: Designers incorporate sustainable materials and techniques to promote biodiversity and ecosystem health. Integrating sustainability into our design process isn't just an ideal; it's a necessity. Our team collaborates closely with engineers and sustainability experts to ensure our packages meet functional needs while embodying sustainability principles. Transitioning to a circular model may seem daunting in today's throwaway economy. However, it also presents an unprecedented opportunity for innovation and transformation. By reimagining the way we design, produce, and consume goods, we have the power to create a resilient system that benefits both business and the environment. This shift can drive prosperity, create jobs, and safeguard the planet for future generations. It's a powerful initiative that can inspire and motivate sustainability experts like us.
