Spoiler Alert: Gregory J. Zimprich, APR, Fellow PRSA and I have retired from teaching at Metro State University. Last week, we graded our final final exams and submitted the last of our grades. How did this journey start? Anne Zimmerman (1942-2007), agency leader, comms director for Iowa Governor Terry Branstad and professor at Drake University, influenced my career in public relations. She brought real-world experience and perspective to the classroom, and her hands-on approach stuck with me. She also instilled leadership lessons, urging me to serve as president of Women in Communications on campus and wrote a letter of recommendation for me to get internships. What Anne likely did not know is she also inspired me to teach. I threw my hat in the ring when a community faculty position opened at Metropolitan State University in 2004. I wanted to help students prepare for their careers. I hoped to instill an appreciation for the power and potential of public relations while offering resources for general success. Knowing that Metro State students are nontraditional, I also wanted to help them distinguish themselves in a competitive job market – our alums have landed in some incredible places! #ProudProf I taught solo for the first 10 years, and when the program grew, Greg Zimprich, my career-long and dear friend, joined as a co-teacher in 2014. Together, we expanded the curriculum, introduced new content and created a semi-annual reunion for students and alums to connect. In 2020, we piloted a career exploration program with Minnesota PRSA, connecting diverse students to exceptional employers, including Mall of America, Medtronic, American Academy of Neurology, Best Buy and more. I have reveled in bringing in hundreds of guest speakers – thank you to all who shared your time and expertise – creating PR plans and materials for hundreds of Minnesota-based organizations, introducing students to books like StrengthsFinder, A Curious Mind, Mindset, Why Should the Boss Listen to You, and advocating for the use of the AP Stylebook and weekly quizzes on current events. Teaching has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career, and it’s also the job I’ve held longer than any of the others on my resume. Thank you, Metro State, students, alums, and my LinkedIn network for being part of this incredible endeavor over the past two decades. What’s next? I’m focusing on Pineapple, will keep the MSU PR Majors reunion going, and am dabbling in some lifestyle content around personal growth and self–discovery—follow along with TwoMinutesDuJour.com. And just because we can’t get enough of public relations principles, Greg and I may collaborate on a textbook.

Media engagement is one aspect of external engagement which academics may encounter in their careers. When starting out, this can be a volatile environment to navigate, but in time can be a useful enrichment to the more traditional aspects of the academic role. Here are my insights which I hope can help anyone newer to media engagement: https://lnkd.in/eZFvvFsb

Did you spot me in Marketing Week today? 👀 Molly Innes really hit the nail on the head with this article about how the marketing industry (as well as many job industries) are letting young talent down. And here's why: 1. A Million Jobs in One Role: Ever scroll through job postings and feel like you need to be a jack-of-all-trades just to apply? Companies are expecting candidates to handle social media, SEO, content creation, graphic design, data analysis… the list goes on. For someone starting in the industry like me, it can be EXTREMELY overwhelming! Sometimes you need a TEAM of passionate individuals rather than one. 2. Years of Experience for Entry-Level Jobs: How is someone supposed to get experience if every entry-level job demands 3-5 years of it? It's a classic catch-22. We need to give fresh graduates a real shot, not shut the door before they’ve even had a chance to knock. #LetThemIn 🚪🎓 3. Lack of Mentorship and Support: Young professionals need guidance and mentorship to thrive in the marketing world. But too often, they’re thrown into the deep end without a lifeline. Providing mentorship and proper onboarding can turn eager newcomers into marketing sensations xoxo 🌟 I was incredibly lucky that Knowlton took a chance on me despite my limited background. Without that opportunity, I’d be stuck like so many other talented graduates who just need someone to believe in them. Let’s Be the Change: - Simplify job requirements. - Be realistic about experience levels, many people are willing to learn! - Foster a culture of mentorship and support. To all the young marketers (and those applying for other roles!) out there, keep pushing, keep slaying, and remember: your breakthrough is coming. 💅
Is the marketing industry letting young talent down? From complicated application processes to negative narratives, young people embarking on marketing careers face an uphill battle https://lnkd.in/eKzMtgnX

Nonprofit AANHPI Leader | Award-Winning Marketing & Communications Manager | DEIB Champion | Youth Mentor | Forever Optimist
In a recent job interview, one of the interviewers asked if I thought marketing and communications had a role in upholding the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. It was so fitting that my social media newsfeed brought me down memory lane that has always answered this very question for me. But first: 👶 I was a younger professional. ❌ I said a lot of “umms” in my interviews with the media then. 💚 I liked wearing my university shirt as my work uniform to don my school pride. 📱 The iPad was the hottest gadget at the time. A lot has changed over the years since these media clips but one thing remains true: marketing absolutely should uphold DEI. It’s all I’ve ever known. Over 10 years ago, one of the highlights of my job as the inaugural social media manager at Portland State University was organizing dozens of events that brought the campus community together. Young and old. MySpace or Instagram user. Rain or shine. It didn’t matter. And boy, we made so many great memories along the way that made the culture of a large, complex institution infinitely better. Good times, right Tracy Weber, Julie Smith, Kenny Dow, Kenny Katz? And a special shout out to Lucila Cejas whose media team frequently covered these events. To my marketing network here: your turn. How are you leveraging the power of marketing to create your workspaces, your community, our world a little better? 🦸 #marketingmonday #marketingforgood #marketing #diversityequityandinclusion #community #psutweetup #GoViks #throwback

Strategic Growth Leader | Pioneering Youth Marketing Strategies | Inspiring Corporate-Student Synergy | Dynamic Speaker and MC 🎙️
Earlier this week I attended the South African Graduate Employers Association (SAGEA) mid-year conference for their Graduate Employer Insights update as well as Employer awards. I always love this event, as it's a great time to connect with industry colleagues and gain valuable insight. This event was no different. What stood out for me, when it comes to employers wanting to connect with grads and top talent, was the following statement from Tim Wise: - It's not a war for talent. It's a war for attention and commitment. If you're a leader within your business and in the talent space, think about this for a moment. As an employer, you're not unique in wanting the best talent. You're not unique in wanting grads who display chutzpah and a will to get ahead. You're not unique in having a solid employer brand. You're not unique in offering learning and development. Did you know that 60% of the candidates who apply, have more than one job offer?! The average number of applications is 9 per applicant. Where you will stand out is how you are able to hold the attention of the graduates you choose. This is likely to be your one crucial unique positioning against your competitors. Because once you have their attention, you will start to gain their commitment. And in the commitment, is where you will see your investment in them pay dividends. #graduates #graduatestrategy #insights #youth #youthmarketing #recruitment #talent Gabi Goldstein Ronen Aires Bonolo Ntamu Thabiso Gcabashe Lebohang Lechela

Communications Advisor I Co-Founder, The Comms Avenue | Communications & Media Trainer I Public Policy
“Dream big but breakdown that dream into achievable goals and objectives.” This is the advice I gave to a young Comms professional after listening to their plans for the year during a one on one session with me. The beginning of the year is where we set these really grand goals. - You want to achieve a 200% increase in downloads in two months. - You want your organisation to rise by 20 places on a repuational ranking before June. Please pause and ask yourself - within the context I operate in, is this a realistic goal? Is it achievable within the given timeframe? Remember, you are not going to be measured by plans only but by the actual results you deliver. So dream big but think SMART. I shared some more Comms career advice in the my lastest video on my YouTube channel, you can watch it here - https://lnkd.in/egABYj-i
