Sometimes something does not feel right. This is exactly how I felt a few years ago when I took my first step in my career. I worked for a small, local (but national) printing pre-press supplies company. It was a wet business then, we developed film and paper to help artwork be made up. In those days, the high resolution silver based image was cut (using a knife) and pasted (using glue) onto a larger canvas to make up the page. Fast forward to today. Cut and paste still exists in the guise of CTRL C and CTRL V. There are no knives, and no glue. The images now can be moved by a click of a move, or drop of a pen – then, you couldn't reposition too much as the original image would become dirty. Once completed, these constructs were photographed on large sheets of film (think 50cm wide!) prior to converting to plate to print. Today, we simply press print – or send the file to someone else to onward process. The manipulation is done using computers, and the output usually more adventurous and more aesthetically pleasing. I moved companies, because I saw this coming. I moved companies, not because the previous company was not functioning – actually, it was a good place to work. We were appreciated, grown and looked after. It was just that the industry was changing.
