Wobble cushion, recently referred to as wiggle seats are great piece of home equipment which require very little space, are simple to use and affordable! They can be used for children for a broad range of needs from core strengthening to ankle strengthening to sensory input and balance. For children who struggle to sit still due to sensory seeking, wobble cushions provide vestibular and proprioceptive input without having to get up and move around. Some wobble cushions also have a textured side providing tactile input as well. Wobble cushions can be used in 4 point, kneeling and standing as a fun way to make balance and core strength activities more challenging! Even adults can use wobble cushions for strengthening after ankle or lower limb injuries or to simply test your own balance! Why not make it a fun game to see who can balance for longer or keep their balance while playing a game together?! #wobblecushions #balance #coordination #corestrength #sensoryinput #PTtool #OTtool #paediatrictherapy #paediatricphysiotherapy #kidsfirst

For individuals with limited hand function, whether resulting from stroke, an accident, paralysis, disease or otherwise, finding a good adaptive handgrip can make a huge difference in one's independence when it comes to performing tasks that require a lot of dexterity. For many, Adaptive Hands Gripping Aid has been the gold standard in functionality for any number of tasks. This article discusses the pros and cons of the Adaptive Hands grips versus a new competitor, the Grip Glove USA. The Grip Glove offers the potential of more wrist stability and multiple D-rings for attaching items directly to the glove. Users can read about what functionality each glove offers, but the bottom line on each of these options is that both will set the user back over $95 a glove, which is far more expensive than what they should cost. #swingingintosaturdays A Dizzying Amount of Benefits with tire swings from @PlayMartPlaygroundEquipment Speaking of tire swings, why do kids love to spin so much? Spinning may seem silly, but it’s an incredibly effective way to help children develop body awareness and coordination. It plays on the different sensory systems of humans—vestibular, proprioceptive, auditory, and visual—working in tandem so that kids can become more aware of their “center”. When sensory integration is difficult for children, occupational therapists channel the park playground and provide activities like a tire swing to stimulate the fluid cavities in the inner ear. These are essential sensors that inform children how they are oriented in space. Of course, at Play Mart, we go above and beyond in everything we do, and our Tire Swing is no exception! Ours is crafted from strong, clean polypropylene instead of rubber, so it won’t leave stains on clothes. Plus, it’s lightweight enough so unexpected bumps won’t knock them off their feet—and its fully enclosed circle also keeps out standing water and bugs! #playgroundequipment #parks #recreation #getoutside #tireswing @play @occupationaltherapy #sensorydevelopment

Is your child 👧 struggling with fine motor skills like dressing and feeding themselves with utensils 😬Has your child's teacher mentioned that their handwriting 📝is messy and they are struggling to complete their school work 🤔Wondering what can you do to help your child improve their fine motor skills to make dressing easier in the mornings when you are trying to get out of the house quickly? Stability at the shoulder muscles 💪is an essential component for coordination, postural control and fine motor skill development. Basically anytime you move your hand and fingers you need your upper body and shoulders to either stabilize or actively contract. Upper body exercises for kids and shoulder strengthening activities can help children develop the muscles necessary for so many skills such as handwriting, playing catch, reaching, picking up small objects and more.🤗 3 Great activities that you can do with your child to help them strengthen their shoulder muscles to improve their fine motor skills: 1. Lying on their tummy propped on their elbows to 🖍colour, draw or read. It is important that your child does not lay their head down on the ground as this does not strengthen their shoulder muscles. 2. Wheelbarrow using a Gymball. Have your child lying over a gymball and walk on their hands forwards 3-5 steps and then backwards to their starting point. Hold your child's legs to help them stay on the Gymball when walking forward and backwards. 3. Tug-a-War with an elastic exercise band is a fun way to activate shoulder and tummy muscles. This activity can be done in sitting or standing depending how coordinated your child is. Try out these fun activities with your child today and Comment below to let us know how you go! Relevant or irrelevant innovation? The Automatic Baby Patting Machine. Check it out … There are over 16.5 million patents currently registered with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) – it follows that not all of these are life-changing new concepts. Some are straightforwardly crazy. What do you think for example of this one: the Automatic Baby Patting Machine. Tired of having to spend time with your beloved offspring? Wish there was a low-effort, automated alternative to your own arms when it comes to soothing their distress? The Automatic Baby Patting Machine takes all the work (and love and care) out of late-night parenting. This device comes with a main ‘base’ unit that attaches to the side of the crib. This has a motor in it, which powers some cogs and wheels that gently ease a wooden arm and padded hand back and forth to ‘pat’ your baby’s back and soothe them back to sleep. Relevant or irrelevant innovation? Ps. The patent from 1968 is expired, for when you’re interested. Pps. Do you want to innovate in a relevant way? Click on the ‘book an appointment’ button above this post, and let’s schedule a free consultation on innovation. One less thing to worry about. My recent article for Calgary’s Child Magazine is on the importance of mouthguards for children. This topic is close to my heart as not only a dentist but also as a mom of busy, active kids. Mouthguards are important for not just contact sports, but activities such as skateboarding or scootering. They can prevent trauma to the teeth by cushioning against impacts and evenly distributing the pressures, preventing acute damage. When selecting a mouthguard for your child, you have a few options to consider: - Custom-Fitted Mouthguards: The gold standard is to have your dentist create a custom-fitted mouthguard specifically tailored to your child’s mouth. While this option is more expensive, it offers the highest level of protection, comfort, and fit, ensuring optimal safety for your child's teeth. - Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards: Over-the-counter boil-and-bite mouthguards can be a more affordable alternative. While not as precise as custom-fitted mouthguards, they still provide a reasonable level of protection and are more budget-friendly. To read more on how mouthguards can protect your child’s smile, giving you one less thing to worry about, read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gCsRMEfc #ChildDentalCare #DentalSafety #KidsHealth

🇨🇦 ♿️ If you're like Brittney and spend 12 hours sitting in a wheelchair each day then what you're sitting on better matter to you. A wheelchair cushion isn't just a thing to keep you comfortable. It's got a job to do and that job is important. It's your cushion's job to redistribute pressure, regulate temperature and moisture, and correct your posture. Without a quality cushion you increase your risk of a pressure injury and every year more than 25 000 people die from these preventable wounds. Choosing a cushion can be overwhelming, especially since there are hundreds of options on the market. But luckily choosing a cushion doesn't have to be done alone. Occupational therapists specializing in wheelchair seating are equipped with the knowledge and expertise to help narrow down the search for a cushion. However, finding an OT in your area that has this specialized knowledge can sometimes be a challenge. That's why Brittney teamed up with Blake Medical, a cushion manufacturer, and Markie Ryckman, a wheelchair seating OT, to bring you a YouTube Live all about how to choose a wheelchair cushion. The live will be an hour long followed by a Q&A session. Blake Medical is also sponsoring a giveaway so this is your chance to get a cushion totally free! Here is the link to the YouTube live: https://lnkd.in/g_izfr4W If you click on the link you'll see a notification bell which lets you sign up for reminders when we go live. We hope to see you all there! #wheelchair #seating #Canada #occupationaltherapy #occupationaltherapist #blakemedical
