A quick guide to getting 30 smart people together for a week and making it hum. Our Senior Leadership Conference is drawing to a close and I’ve been thinking about the week’s wins (many) and losses (honestly, none so far). Essentially, you need a few stars to align to make it a success but you’ve agency over most of them. This is definitely not an exhaustive list (which is code for when I’ve missed something obvious I can point to this sentence as a feeble defence): 1️⃣ We have a really respectful senior leadership team and partnership. We listen to each other and hold space for one another to be heard. The room has a rhythm. Do we agree on every single point? Absolutely not and that’s a really good thing - you must avoid the perils of an echo chamber at all costs. ✅ You’re trying to reach a consensus and once the decision is reached there’s a cabinet collective responsibility. You own that decision as a group. 2️⃣ Have a wonderful partnership secretary. Susanna is essentially the partnership’s heartbeat. You need incredibly tight organisation and ruthless monitoring of the schedule. Everything that happens seamlessly inside and outside the room does not happen by chance. A good partnership secretary’s fingerprints are all over it. Typically, you’ve a lot of stuff to get through and you’ve a room full of some very articulate people who excel at talking. You also have me. Less articulate but even more of a talker. ⏰ You’re always against the clock. With Susanna’s help, we managed to stay on top of it. (Susanna is also far too cool to check LinkedIn hence why she’s not tagged.) 3️⃣ An all staff party. We often have these weeks away in jurisdictions where we don’t have offices. We might revisit that after this week’s success in the BVI. Basically, it’s a lot of fun making sure everyone gets a chance to spend time with people from different offices. 🗣️ It opens up conversations that are crammed with different perspectives. The energy from the night before is transferred to the room the next day. Win win for any business. 4️⃣ Make space for conversations outside the room. Often people haven’t seen each other in person for an age. Make sure there are lots of opportunities for organic catch ups. Our venue worked really well for that. 🐿️ Lots of nooks and crannies to squirrel yourself away in as well as a beach to stroll along. Perfect. 5️⃣ The tech break I talked about earlier in the week. Honestly, a real game changer for focus and intent. Are staged photos important? I couldn’t possibly say.

As parents, leaders, mentors and coaches, many of us have had our fair share of doing this over the years. #PersonalReflection One of my daughters was struggling as a 12 year old because a myriad of circumstances. There was no simple solution, there was no quick fix. So we talked, and we formulated a plan... it's now nearly 5 years later and her stated goal of winning a trophy was realized. That moment when she came out of her room with a well deserved trophy is one of those memories that punctuates your journey and you carry with you forever. The look of pride on her face created a smile felt in my soul. #ProfessionalReflection As a #coach / #leader - a young staff member came to me once in Australia and wanted to switch from a part time to full time retail sales role... So we sat down and discussed his 'Why'... It turns out the 'Why' was arrived at because there alternatives weren't in his tool box (or his wheel house depending on where you live). So we figured it out and he did it. That was 15 years ago... the chap is now a highly educated, #successful and a happily married guy. I smile when I reflect on that conversation. There are a number of examples we all have but some connect at a more personal level - as I am sure you have your examples. So back to the coach in this #video - small steps, #consistency, and #positivereinforcement. This is a bittersweet memory for me. The perfect example of putting a smile on, hiding that you feel crushed inside. A feeling we all know too well as business owners. To be honest, I’d wanted to win this award since I started by business at 18 years old. I was over the moon when I was shortlisted, and invited a full table, with my clients, team, and suppliers. 🌙 On the morning of the awards night, I started experiencing symptoms of miscarriage, and by lunchtime, I knew this was the case. No HR or manager to call, I just wanted to hide away. Running a business through personal challenges is no easy task - and there's no guidebook in place for when you’re the boss, when you’re not able to take the necessary time off needed to grieve, heal, or recover. I didn’t want to go to the awards, but my husband convinced me we should still go. I didn’t want to let the people I’d invited down, and giving up isn’t in my nature. So, I decided to put a smile on and step up. And, I won. ✨🏆 It didn’t feel like a victory, but it reminded me of how strong I could be. After receiving the news last week that I’ve been nominated for a Yorkshire Choice Award for 2024, it immediately cast my mind back to this moment. Two years on from this, and I’m in the position I dreamed about being in back then. Business is good, expecting our first baby and nominated for another award. 👩🏼💼👪🏆 It doesn't matter whether I win or not, because i'm proud of how far i've come personally and professionally since this moment. All business owners should give themselves a kindness award. Play Through the Echo of The Whistle A few weeks ago, while attending The C.P.I.A. Conference in Wrigleyville, I had a late-night conversation with Tom Reber of The Contractor Fight. Tom’s an amazing speaker and guru in the contractor space teaching the audience how to refuse to lose. Over a wonderfully crafted cocktail we discussed the concept of time and/or the lack thereof with the question being “How do you maintain energy and passion when time is working against you”. Which pertains to today as it’s now October and the beginning of the last quarter for most of us. Some of us are looking at a finish line of success where others are running out of time. Some of us are struggling to resist the temptation to take our proverbial foot off the pedal, while others are shaking our collective heads simultaneously wondering what the hell happened and why bother? The answer to both situations is BECAUSE IT MATTERS! Bad habits don’t just occur via a bolt of lightning. Instead, they creep in slowly, over time and it starts by settling for. By accepting an outcome before it becomes reality. As Tom preaches, we’re faced with about 80 decisions a day and it’s what we do with those decisions that determines success or failure over time. If trying to lose weight, do you grab that handful of chips…that donut or do you win the decision? In this case, our decision needs to be to re-discover the focus and hunger we had in January. Remember the plans we put into place to achieve success and continue to push like hell. It’s important to understand that the goal we set, whether achieved or not, is nothing more than a marker - a placeholder that measures our efforts and not a true indicator of our abilities or focus. So, if you’re having a kick ass year, look for more rumps to abuse. But, if it’s more of a struggle, all the more reason to finish as strong as you can. Because winners, no matter the score, always play through the echo of that damned whistle! 

Yesterday Nicholsons Chartered Accountants hosted our Leaders Breakfast at Lincoln City FC. At previous events we have covered; distributed working, leading with authenticity, being a resilient leader and people management, all topics we know are at the top of leaders to do lists. This time we decided to cover Intellectual Property (IP) which is such an important asset to understand as it can super charge value creation in an SME.   To help us navigate the topic we were joined by Oliver Pooley from IP Specialists Barker Brettell LLP. Oliver explained how different types of IP can be protected and gave us some really great tips when considering the IP in our own businesses plus some traps to watch out for.   My takeaways were:-   ✅ There may be grants that will help identify IP that can be protected. ✅ It is important to know who designs your artwork. ✅ Focus your protection strategy around the regions that are important to you. ✅ Think of IP early in the project process to avoid problems later. ✅ Think of IP registration and protection like insurance!   #valuecreation #IntellectualProperty #leaders #leadersinlincolnshire

I'm very honoured to have been invited by the AoEC - The Academy of Executive Coaching to run not one but SEVEN workshops dedicated to 'Unlocking your Marketing Potential' over the next seven months. How a simple suggestion to celebrate the small wins and how it can impact our stress and success We’d all agree the least celebrating the small wins does is it makes us happier Through reviewing or noticing our action We notice what good is happening A client was recently transitioning a family business from small engine repair to selling sheds and home standby generators. This meant letting go of everything he worked for, everything he knew since his teen years, it meant letting go of the business his father had started. The challenges were plentiful and each one carried a doubt to his choice of change. First it was cleaning out and wrapping up his loyal customers, then his shop While creating a plan to market and sell his new products This required a plan, execution and many efforts and thoughts of seeing the outcome long before signs of success were present… The hill at times for him was getting too steep,  He found himself frustrated or complaining often about the tasks he had to do “My plate is so full I am feeling overwhelmed! I am not sure this is worth it” There were many tasks he had to redo or learn how to do for the first time. We had a different point of view on this: He felt overwhelm I saw opportunity I asked “Why complain?” "Why would you expect this to be any different?" "If we embrace it, you can have the fun you desire to have If you complain, you just live in complaint space" "We have to live with our thoughts" He agreed I suggested he look at it differently We turned to focusing on every small win or completion So each hour they would stop and one person had to share a win, something positive done or gained. Not only did the doubts diminish, they all started to see what was right instead of why this change was difficult, or was not making sense. They all started feeling like a team, this might actually work out, they could make it! Did this minor adjustment create a huge million dollar company? Not yet but they all started to believe and feel that it is possible. Celebrating what is good, something that happened right, brought more awareness to the good happening. The observation is, when we fill the space with wins, successes, and positive results  there is no room left for negativity, lack of, or doubts This is when the work I do with clients, changes outcomes and lives Road Tested

On the last day of thanks, I wanted to thank our fearless leader, Scott Lawton! Funny thing about my journey to bartaco is I interviewed with Scott over three years ago. The interview lasted all of five minutes because at the time he wanted someone to relocate and I had already left a power house company in the DC/VA area to find my forever home for my family back in the Philadelphia. We had a laugh during that call, realized timing wasn’t right and wished each other luck. Fast forward three years and Jack Gibbons invited me to a lunch at RestaurantSpaces with Scott. The three of us talked shop, talked about strategy, and life. I held my own, but also told them about my goals. Scott called me a week later and said that there was something about me and he needed me on his team and he needed me now. Of course we had the negotiation battle, but I was thrilled to hear him speak about my goals and that he would help me get there. I was thrilled he recognized my drive and wanted me on his team. The thing about working in the PE world for fast growth concepts is you have to be a shark willing to swim with other sharks. A “Type A” personality, a killer willing to go to battle not only externally of your company, but internally to push the boundaries, question the status quo and not sit silent in the corner. You have to be able to go into a board room have a knock out, drag out fight with the team, not take it personal, figure it out, then leave in unison ready to lead the charge. Scott saw that in me, he saw my determination and I believe that’s why he called me. A CEO is a visionary, a leader, who pushes boundaries and it’s their job to find the various puzzle pieces to create a unique team to come together and execute at a high level. Scott has found that team bartaco and I am thrilled to be a part of it. I just crossed a year and we have made major strides at bartaco. Relaunching PM’s, restructuring the internal team, revamping our vendor network. We launched Ecotrak and have started tackling the R&M issues. We can see the sunrise on the horizon and everyday we strive to get a little better. The momentum is on our side all because Scott let’s me do what I do best, execute. He challenges me daily, but ultimately let’s me run my team and take risks. He knows I don’t take this lightly and not only want to succeed for myself, but every employee and the company bottom line. By leading my own division he reminds me that you can flourish or you can flounder, giving me freedom puts all that squarely on me… So today on the last day of giving thanks. I give thanks to Scott for seeing my potential, hearing my passion and bringing me on board years after our first encounter. Our brand logo is a Dragonfly, which symbolizes new beginnings, embracing change and postivitey on the horizon… Scott put his trust in me to respresent that and our brand, I will not let him down…💪🏼 #restaurants #business #leadership #culture #hospitality
