Today’s guest on the Culturally Intelligent Safety Professional is Marilyn Hubner Marilyn is a safety professional, academic and manager of the Australian Institute of Health and Safety’s OHS Body of Knowledge. https://www.ohsbok.org.au/ https://lnkd.in/gHyw9vB6 Marilyn’s career spans being a tradesperson, she spent time in the Australian Defence Force and has worked as an educator. Marylin was elected as a Health and Safety Rep and her safety career grew from there resulting in a role with the National Safety Council as an instructor. We discuss whether cultural intelligence has a place in the safety curriculum, which Marilyn agrees it does however she highlights a slight roadblock in achieving this and that’s where does it fit? We heard a similar comment in episode 2 when we asked Chris Peace a similar question and got a similar answer. In Chris’s case the roadblock was having to comply with IOSH requirements around course design. Marilyn’s response was a little broader in that there doesn’t seem to be an accepted component part for what we might call Essential Skills or Power Skills, she suggested that its almost an expectation of educational institutions that people already have these Essential Skills like leadership, communication, influencing, and empathy all of which contribute to being more culturally intelligent. Marilyn touched on one of the skills of those who are culturally intelligent and that was adaptability when she discussed arriving in Vietnam to teach a masters class to find no presentation technology available and had to resort to some, maybe, less traditional ways to get her message across. She also reflects a story where technology was a significant part of a programme she was delivering and this was a roadblock for a student from an age perspective, someone who wasn’t computer literate and again other methods of communication had to be used. Marilyn encourages safety professionals to incorporate diversity in their presentations including pictures, videos etc, suggesting we represent the diversity that’s actually in our workplaces. She suggests that we include learning about cultural differences in our professional development plans. Follow the link to hear the full recording of my discussion with Marilyn Hubner. The Culturally Intelligent Safety Professional is available now. #connection #engagement #value #culturalintelligence https://lnkd.in/gNyNz35H

"Just a little twinge" – a phrase we often use to downplay discomfort or pain, especially in the workplace. But what if this seemingly insignificant twinge was a warning sign of something more serious? Today, let's consider the story of a delivery man working for a logistics company. Amid his hectic schedule, he arrived at a residence to collect a large parcel. With an already strained back from the day's workload, he decided to hoist the heavy box onto his shoulder. Rushing to his next job, he navigated down the porch steps, only to slip and crash down, striking his back hard against the steps. Clutching his back in pain, he attempted to rise and continue his duties. However, this was no minor discomfort; it was much more than just a twinge. This incident is a stark reminder of the risks we often overlook in our daily tasks. At Safetyman Academy, we understand that the gap between knowledge and its practical application in safety is crucial. True safety is not merely about adhering to protocols; it's about cultivating a culture of responsibility and accountability for our actions. We have developed over 140 online CPD certified training courses, aimed at instilling such values. Our courses cover various safety topics, emphasizing not only the technical but also the ethical aspects of safe practices. Our aim is to enable individuals and organizations to make informed decisions, comprehend the repercussions of their actions, and assume responsibility, particularly when things deviate from the plan. Recognizing the importance of inclusivity, our courses are available in 60 languages, ensuring accessibility to a diverse global audience. We believe that safety education is a right for every worker, regardless of their geographical location or language. This January, in our ongoing effort to foster a culture of safety and responsibility, we are offering a special 20% discount on our courses. This initiative reflects our commitment to making safety training both accessible and affordable, encouraging individuals and organizations globally to prioritize their safety and well-being. "Keeping an eye on the job," we've all heard it, we've all said it, and most of us understand its importance. But do we truly practice it in our day-to-day tasks, especially in our workplaces? In the attached video, two young women are enjoying a casual game of ping pong. As they get more adventurous and try to add a bit of fun into their game, one of the young women climbs onto a large swing. As her friend is so engrossed in the keeping up the ball game, she fails to notice the impending danger as he friend slips off this, and the swing comes crashing back into her face. This translates to our workplaces in a more severe way. Many workplace incidents occur due to lack of attention or awareness. Whether it's a piece of machinery being operated improperly, safety procedures being bypassed, or a colleague in danger, if we fail to keep our eyes on the job, the consequences can be much graver than a swing to the face. It's easy to get complacent, especially when tasks become routine, and we feel we know them like the back of our hands. But let's remember - safety never takes a holiday. Constant vigilance is required, not just from a personal perspective, but also towards our colleagues and the environment we work in. At Safetyman Academy, we place a high emphasis on cultivating this level of awareness through our various training courses. Our programs are designed to remind every worker, manager, and employer that attention to detail is paramount when it comes to safety. "Keeping an eye on the job" should be more than an expression; it should be a standard practice. Safety isn't about luck. It's about vigilance, awareness, and commitment to maintaining a secure environment. Remember, when you watch out for safety, you're ensuring that safety will watch out for you. Visit www.safetyman.academy today and join us in promoting a culture of safety awareness. #SafetymanAcademy #WorkplaceSafety #SafetyFirst #SafetyTraining #SafetyCulture
