In navigating the roles of Vice President of Indigenous Engagement and President within the Graduate Student Association, I've come to understand the profound importance of speaking one's truth and embracing authenticity. Our journey through graduate studies, much like life itself, necessitates introspection and a willingness to confront our actions, especially when they may have caused harm. Recognizing the need for correction and growth is not a sign of weakness but rather a testament to our capacity for reflection and evolution. As we prepare to transition from academia to the broader world beyond, we must carry forward the lessons learned and the values upheld during our time in graduate studies. Our actions here ripple into the future, shaping the communities we inhabit and the impact we leave behind. Let us strive to act with integrity, not for self-aggrandizement, but for the collective betterment of society. In doing so, we honour our true selves and contribute to a world guided by compassion, understanding, and respect. nakoniyihitotin (We are all one/related),

Welcome to the Fall semester & our People to Know FSU History edition! Meet Dr. Ben Dodds! You may know him as the professor of your European history class, but Dr. Dodds is also the new director of Undergraduate Studies in History (one of two associate chairs in the History department). Email: [email protected] Q. What do you usually do in your day-to-day work life? A. I teach classes on European History. I am also the new Director of Undergraduate Studies in History, so I will be involved in the organization of History classes more broadly. Students are very welcome to come and meet me. I'll be posting office hours, and I'm also happy to make appointments by email. Q. What's your area of interest? A. Popular literature in modern Spain interests me, because reading the stories which people told and consumed in the past tells us about their views and the way they thought. Q. What's a fun fact about you? A. I enjoy baking traditional English cakes and desserts. As we enter Fall, I like making flapjack which is a sort of oat bar made with honey. Dr. Dodds' advice to students: The key thing is to identify aspects of History (particular periods, places, kinds of sources, kinds of approaches etc.) which interest you and then to develop those interests. Take the opportunity to read further about any aspect of your classes which interests you. This deeper and wider reading will really help with your work and hopefully you will find new enthusiasms too. Post credit: Brooke #fsuhistory #undergradstudies #history #fall2023

A little over a year ago I was able to participate in what would be the very last The University of Texas at Austin sanctioned Latinx graduation. I never knew a graduation ceremony held in a gymnasium would make me feel thankful and lucky, to be part of the 8% of Latinas to hold a graduate degree. Texas Senate Bill 17 eroded so many amazing opportunities, organizations and over 60 staff member and or professors who were laid off by overcompliance of SB 17. The dismantling of cultural graduation ceremonies and the multicultural engagement center at public universities in Texas have created a resilience in Texas students that SB 17 cannot break. In less than six months students and organizer were able to find funds in order to continue the survival of the Latinx graduation in spite of the The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Julissa Muñiz, PhD: keynote speech shined a light for why cultural graduations are essential. “The reality of some getting to a place like UT can sometimes be jarring and overwhelming especially after almost two years of social isolation. Institutions sometimes have a way of making us feel like we don’t belong especially when you look around there aren’t many people who look like you, sound like you, or have experienced the things like you have. Still I want to remind you that you have always belonged and it’s on institutions to change not you. The reality is that you every single one of you is carving out a wider and more equitable path for those behind you not just in your family but for the nearly 3.6 million Latinx kids under the age of 18 growing up in Texas who may one day want to follow in your footsteps.
