The government has set up a minimum wage board for the tannery industry to revise the existing minimum wage. The board consists of representatives from both employers and workers who will discuss and negotiate various proposals concerning the minimum wage. Conducting empirical analysis on structure and composition of wage of the tannery is often considered useful to assist the wage board in identifying challenges and potential solutions for implementing a new wage that is fair and practical. Against this backdrop, OSHE Foundation and Leather Development Forum (LDF), in partnership with the CPD, has conducted a study titled ‘Minimum Wage for the Bangladeshi Tannery Industry in 2024: An Empirical Analysis’. The main objective of the study was to propose a minimum wage and review the performance of key indicators relevant for the setting up of minimum wage as stipulated in Bangladesh Labour Act (BLA). The findings of the study are presented at the media briefing.

Several U.S. States Raise Minimum Wage in 2024 Minimum wage is defined as the lowest legal pay rate that a company can offer its employees. Crucially, the minimum wage does not derive from a calculation of the subsistence level for a given region or household size, but rather is set by elected officials within a federal, state, or local government. Typically, the minimum wage is adjusted for inflation. While Several states have maintained at $7.25 an hour since the last federal minimum wage increase in 2009, many are now experiencing a wage hike that went into effect January 1, 2024. Department of Labor’s Proposed Rule, which would increase the white collar minimum weekly pay threshold to $1,509, would restore the Department of Labor’s policy prior to 2019 of only setting special lower salary levels for employees in those U.S. territories that are not subject to the full federal minimum wage (currently $7.25 per hour). The Department proposes to apply the standard salary level ($1,059 per week) to employees in Puerto Rico, where the federal minimum wage has applied since 1996; Guam, where the federal minimum wage has applied since at least 1957; the U.S. Virgin Islands, where the federal minimum wage has applied since 1989; and the CNMI, where the federal minimum wage has applied since 2018.
