Last month, we almost built a working brain-computer program to control Spot (the Boston Dynamics robot dog), which we coded in 36 hours at TreeHacks, Stanford University's largest hackathon. Our initial motivation was to develop a robot prototype to help individuals with visual impairments to better navigate by integrating a brain-computer interface to enhance user experience, and to have Spot perform mapping and pick-and-place operations. While our initial goal exceeded our work after 36 hours, we were nonetheless able to code a client-server connection with Spot for issuing motion commands, and develop a binary classifier for EEG OpenBCI readings - and we were just hours away from integrating both components to finalize an end-to-end BCI-to-robot controller. ` It was our group's first time working with Spot, and personally feeling super grateful for the chance to have worked with Isita B., Luke Kulm and Jasmine Huier Yu; I also wanted to thank Vitaly Bulatov and Aleksandr Kapitonov for the chance to work with Spot using the MerkleBot SDK, and to the TreeHacks organizing team for the opportunity to participate. Our group is interested in opportunities to further develop our project as a package to automate and facilitate processing brain signals for robotic control purposes.
