It's interesting to note some of the seemingly conflicting directions in today's business world. Here's a relevant observation that emerged during a recent dialogue, which begs further reflection: On one hand, we're seeing a surge in the number of companies in the gambling, betting, and day trading sectors, as well as a boom in cryptocurrency speculation. From online casinos to sportsbooks to fintech platforms, the emphasis is almost by default on quick gains. This trajectory is driven by an urgency to make fast money and -arguably-climb the social ladder, amplified by the urge to flex our status achievements on social media and fuelled by dopamine hits that satiate our 'here and now' cravings. On the other hand, there's an increasing focus on ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) principles. Buzzwords like 'sustainability,' 'social justice,' and 'ethical governance' have become ubiquitous in sectors ranging from technology to finance. This trajectory appears—or at least claims—to be motivated by a vision for long-term planetary survival and societal well-being. Strikingly, these two trends seem to serve as counterbalances. It's almost as if the ESG commitments act as a moral antidote—or dare we say, ethical 'washing'—to the quick-profit, high-risk models seen in the gambling and speculative sectors. So, what future does this bifurcation point toward? A split ethical landscape or an evolving equilibrium that integrates these divergent pursuits? Your insights are invaluable.
