Africa has a high operational cost base and a low propensity to spend on air travel. Infrastructure and connectivity challenges dampen the industry’s expansion and performance. In 2024, ten African countries lead in the number of #airlines, reflecting the region's increasing reliance on air transport due to vast geographical spreads, underdeveloped road and rail infrastructures, and challenging terrains. According to data from Planespotters, these countries have expanded their fleets and networks to meet the growing demand for air travel. Nigeria tops the list with 87 airlines, followed by South Africa with 70, and Kenya with 64. Other countries on the list include Egypt, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Angola, Tanzania, Sudan, and Gabon. Lomé is the hub of west Africa aviation travel Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport, Lomé, Republic of Togo. This airport is the hub of the pan African airline. A Sky. The airport is small but services far better than two Cameroon’s international airports: Nsimalen and Douala. And more, the Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport has free WiFi whereas Cameroon’s two international airports doesn’t have WiFi. Cameroon, let us keep calling ourselves superlative names: miniature Africa, continent, planet or galaxy. While we deceive ourselves into thinking that we are what we’re not, others are working and improving while we run our loud mouths.

✈️ A pleasure to share the stage this morning with Dr Namhla T., Airlink Aaron Munetsi, Airlines Association of Southern Africa George Mothema, BARSA (Board of Airline Representatives of South Africa) Sarah Ferjani, African Union Development Agency-NEPAD and great moderation by Natalia Rosa. The SADC Business Council Tourism Alliance is making moves to connect private and public sector stakeholders and create a more business and tourims friendly environment. As a private institution, AviaDev is pragmatic and we will continue to work within the bounds of the current regulations. However, it was great to be invited to share my thoughts on how fifth freedoms can be used to build demand and develop routes, especially for thin routes. I made the point that African Civil Aviation Commission AFCAC has set an ambitious target of increasing the share of fifth freedom routes from 15% to 30% by 2025. The example I cited was Kenya Airways Nairobi to Cape Town. Started in 2016 as fifth freedom via LVI or VFA and today has 9 weekly flights, 2 of which are directly served with the 787 dreamliner. The aim is to increase this to 14 weekly and this is a case in point of active route development on the part of the Wesgro Cape Town Air Access team and the use of fifth freedom to build point-to-point demand. Uganda Airlines: Expanding African carriers’ wings The rebranded Uganda Airlines is opening up the African skies albeit gradually, while also expanding into the hitherto monopolised routes of major carriers. The revived East African carrier is steadily becoming a giant in African space with its tenacious expansion of routes in the last four years when it began operations. Since its birth four years ago, Uganda Airlines from its base at Entebbe International Airport has spread its wings to 12 cities, major African countries, including Nigeria and South Africa, Middle East with plans to operate into Europe, Asia and America soon. With its small fleet size of six aircraft; two Airbus A330-800 and four Bombardier CRJ900ER, Uganda Airlines has been able to meticulously deploy its aircraft fleet. It’s a typical example of “not by size, but by utilisation.” In all, Uganda Airlines is setting the pace for other African carriers, while giving the already established airlines like Ethiopian Airlines, South African Airways, and Kenya Airways a run for their money. If the government gives Uganda Airlines the freewill to operate without interference like the Ethiopian Government is doing with Ethiopian Airlines, Uganda Airlines would continue to spreadits wings.
