Last week I spent a full day with the leadership team of Presbyterian Senior Living in Dillsburg PA. as one of our activities, I’d asked each of PSL’s 30 communities to bring a decorated pickle jar to help us launch The Pickle Challenge for Charity. I said that I would use my own arbitrary and capricious criteria to select winning entries for categories that I would create. I was blown away by their creativity! These are just a few of the contest entries. They weren’t just decorated pickle jars – they were artistic creations! Not only that, many of the participants also had Pickle Free Zone t-shirts, hats, and other paraphernalia. The pickle jar decorating contest is typically the first activity in launching The Pickle Challenge for Charity. Making people more aware of their own negative attitudes, including chronic complaining, is an important step toward creating a more positive Culture of Ownership. The Pickle Challenge is fun, it’s free, and it gives people a soft-touch, lighthearted way to hold themselves and each other to higher standards of behavior at work. Fundraising results as flat as a pancake? 😕 Time to try new things! 😀 At SOS, I tried 2 new approaches at the end of the year. 1️⃣ 📮 I ran the first postal appeal for the organisation. 📮 We contacted 2,000 supporters including new subscribers, those who had recently given a gift and those who had lapsed in their giving. We made a small profit however what was exciting was who we engaged. 1/3 were lapsed donors who re-engaged with us. People who had not responded (maybe not even received!) our emails but responded to this letter. We now understand how to communicate with these donors in future. 2️⃣ 📆 I created the first calendar for the organisation 📆 I created this using Canva and used images donated by an amazing wildlife photographer so there were no design costs. AND we did it on pre-order and were upfront that we needed at least 25 orders to go ahead. We ended up with over 💯 orders! We learned a lot from the process (like starting promotion earlier!) and are going to collect feedback so we can make an even better calendar for 2025. Let’s face it, you really only need a couple of vases with different sizes, shape, and color. The flags might’ve disappeared but that doesn’t mean the Pride copy has vanished just yet 🏳️🌈 (Or maybe it’s just us clinging on…) Here’s why I actually really like this copy: 🏳️🌈 It’s relevant to the product and wider business There’s nothing worse than a business trying to shoehorn in an event, holiday, or moment of significance for the sake of it when it doesn’t suit them. Makeup is a pretty big part of Pride celebrations, so it’s not only highly relevant but it’s also done in a way that emphasises the basis of occasion. 🏳️🌈 Direct, clear outlining of partnership and donations Sure, we could split hairs over the amount donated. But it’s plenty more than a lot of other businesses, and they’re actually transparent about it. It’s a clear signpost and it’s a great trust-builder. 🏳️🌈The emotional connection ‘Never your Pride’ is the part I loved the most because, unfortunately, a lot of people still feel compelled to scrub their face clean before they leave a Pride event for fear of backlash. You can remove your makeup, but you don’t have to remove your pride 🙏🏻 All in all, I actually think Garnier smashed it. #ProudOfPrideCopy #MakesAChange
