We test soils for microbial populations 🐛🦠 (bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes) to gather insight into what processes and interactions are taking place. Microbes are absolutely critical to the functioning of an agricultural system - with out them nothing would happen, nutrients don't cycle themselves. Microbes cycle nutrients through the processes of decomposition, mineralization, nitrogen fixation, nutrient immobilization, and chemical transformations of nutrients present in the soil. GLBRC is celebrating #SharkWeek! 🦈 🎆 Poplar trees have great potential for biofuels, and new GLBRC research shows how engineered poplars could even help save sharks! Scientists led by Michigan State University biochemists have reported that poplar trees can be engineered to produce a highly valuable chemical commonly obtained from shark livers. This chemical, called squalene, has often been obtained through the overfishing of shark populations. Poplars are already very viable as a bioenergy feedstock. Using this crop additionally as a source of specialty chemicals makes poplars more economically viable in a competitive industry and provides a more sustainable alternative to processes like shark harvesting. As a scientist, I could relate that biological measurement reflects only the sampling time and conditions. In my research, I have found that daily fluctuations in microbial food in soil solutions, namely carbohydrates, amino sugars and amino acids, override treatment effects, whether the treatment is cover crop mixture or a fertilization scheme. Meta analysis just reflect what's in the literature.. Current findings have proven mainstream understanding and knowledge wasn't righteous.. in most of field dealing with biology.. However, I don't doubt the results but few points to look at: - How was the reviewed study set up. I have reviewed studies for top soil science journal where soil biological activity was measured in a experimental context that cease any activity. - How was the cover crop mixture prepared in light of soil conditions, species etc. And then comes two very important aspects: - how is soil borne disease and susceptibility to insect and fungi in monoculture vs. soil cover. This has environmental and economic consequences starting from soil to neurological disease, cancer, dead zones in water bodies.. - How did both systems respond to undesirable weather events.. frost, heat wave, flood.. We can see which farmer would be hurt.. Some results, especially those in contrary, are made to bring more research questions but marketers can benefit to promote their ..... (you band it).
27 studies. 10 counties. 243 full comparisons. The cumulative evidence thus far shows that cover crop mixtures do not give a clear advantage over monocultures. When it comes to:- - Cover crop biomass - Weed suppression - Nitrogen retention - Water conservation - Soil biology promotion - Following crop yield - Biomass stability over time The best covercrop mixture did not outperform the best monoculture consistently in any of them. A common belief is that a diverse mixture of plant species will drive greater diversity in the soil than a monoculture. This is often given as a reason to grow cover crop mixtures. In fact, conversion from highly diverse natural ecosystems to homogeneous agricultural monocultures has a positive effect on microbial alpha diversity. The current science tells us that:- Cover crop mixtures are no better than monocultures. That the diversity in plant form (shoots and roots) does not lead to greater function in mixtures. That soilborne fungal pathogens may be the mechanism behind the advantage (in the long-term) of perennial plant mixtures.
