FIBL and Organika recently conducted a study trip to Romania with Kosovan professionals in the aromatic and medicinal plant sector. 🏵️💮 This was a part of the ongoing EREA project funded by Caritas Schweiz. Leading organic actors from both countries were able to discover new non-wood forest harvesting products, from blueberries and mushrooms to the more unusual Arnica Montana and sea buckthorn. This road trip was also a rare moment for these entrepreneurs to forge new business links and exchange ideas on how to meet the challenges most specific to the situation in Kosovo. FIBL is involved in this initiative by providing expertise in organic farming and sustainable agriculture as well as supporting the development of a certification system for organic products. About the EREA project: As a follow-up of the 3-year SIRED project, the EREA project aims to enhance the capacity of Kosovo's agricultural sector by promoting sustainable agriculture practices and improving the livelihoods of farmers. The project also focuses on improving the market access for organic products and enhancing the overall competitiveness of the agricultural sector in Kosovo.

Urvara Krsi's dried fruits project was envisaged to add to our existing operations with a view to incorporate our sustainable agriculture approach, and also adding to the existing Urvara Krsi portfolio. The project is based in Telangana, near farms of many fruits: banana, papaya, mango, and others. Most importantly, these can all be sourced directly from the farmers, which is the Urvara Krsi way. The fruit-drying machine is from France, and the project has been initiated in technical collaboration with partners in France. Trials are being optimised with their inputs. Our process is 100% natural, using slightly over-ripe fruits and converting them into dried fruit. Today we are undertaking trials, optimising the end-product with local Indian fruits and feedback from markets both Indian and overseas. KNCCI President, Dr. Eric Rutto, met with representatives from the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), led by Dr Cheng Cheng, the Lead for Asian Partnerships, and Mr John Macharia, the Country Manager for Kenya. AGRA, an African-led partnership mission is to help millions of small-scale farmers and their families lift themselves out of poverty and hunger. Its programmes develop practical solutions to significantly boost farm productivity and incomes for the poor while safeguarding the environment. The conversation focused on the agricultural sector and explored ways in which KNCCI and AGRA could collaborate to enhance the entire agricultural value chain. This collaboration spans from generating and breeding high-quality seeds, providing top-notch machinery, promoting sustainable farming techniques, and ensuring adherence to export standards. Discussions took place on how Africa could leverage agricultural investments, highlighting a fund from the Chinese government aimed at subsidizing the cost of high-quality machinery for farmers. The goal is to improve the agricultural sector through training and capacity building, investment in modern technology, advanced equipment, and agro-processing. The potential partnership in using agricultural drones to simplify business operations was also considered. KNCCI expressed its intention to diversify exported products to China beyond avocados and macadamia nuts, including chillies, mushrooms, beef, water melon and other agricultural goods. It was also noted that KNCCI plans to lead a business delegation to the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in November, seeking more opportunities for Kenyan businesses to export their products to China. KNCCI called for collaboration in several key areas: addressing post-harvest losses, warehousing, value addition, creating demonstration farms as educational tools, promoting smart climate farming, SME diagnostics in agriculture tagetting 3000 women for financing with an ultimate goal of over 127,000 businesses. Present were KNCCI's National Directors Lucy Muchoki, Cynthia Nyawira, Shakir Swaleh, and the CEO of KNCCI, Mr. Patrick Nyangweso, along with KNCCI Secretariat.

China, the world’s biggest agriculture importer, has set targets to drastically reduce its reliance on overseas buying over the coming decade in line with its push for food security, but they will be exceedingly difficult to meet, experts say. With limited land and water, China will have to sharply increase farming productivity through technology, including genetically modified crops, and expand area under cultivation to meet Beijing’s 10-year projections. The government envisions 92% self-sufficiency in staple grains and beans by 2033, up from 84% during 2021-2023, according to a document released in late April, on a path towards President Xi Jinping’s goal to become an “agriculture power” by the middle of the century.
