Latest developments in agroforestry at EURAF 2024 🌾🌳🌾 A team of FiBL employees attended the European Agroforestry Conference in Brno, Czech Republic, last week. Exciting new developments on topics such as climate protection, pest control, legislation and the spread of agroforestry were discussed. Linnéa Hauenstein from FiBL presented the work on Vitiforst. Agroforestry is an important landscape planning measure for erosion control, diversification of production and landscape aesthetics. 🌳 More information on agroforestry: https://lnkd.in/dCxpCrRz 🌳 EURAF website: https://lnkd.in/dSwDrrc3 #Agroforestry #Climateprotection #Euraf #Euraf2024

In the 4th course, Agroforestry IV: Climate, Carbon Storage and Agroforestry from University of Florida of the 5 course series, the instructor, Dr. P. K. Nair raises his concerns on the ambiguity in the concepts of carbon sequestration. For example, in the very definition of Carbon Sequestration, the term 'long lived pools of carbon' lacks clarity in how much duration constitute enough to be long. Although, commonly accepted duration is 100 years. #carbonsequestration #climatechange #agroforestry #TOFI

#CelebrationsoftheInternationalDayofBiodiversity Human survival is intrinsically linked to forests, yet deforestation and forest degradation continue at alarming rates. 🚨 These ecosystems are crucial for our well-being, as they regulate the climate, purify air and water, and host exceptional biodiversity. The consequences of this loss will be tragic, especially in tropical areas rich in biodiversity. The destruction of these forests leads not only to the disappearance of plant and animal species but also disrupts the livelihoods of millions of people who directly depend on forest resources. We must act now to reverse this trend and promote sustainable practices that protect our forests. Learn more about this crucial issue and explore potential solutions by downloading a free copy of the report here ↪ [Link to the document](https://bit.ly/3w4R4mf). Together, we can make a difference. Let's share knowledge and initiatives for a greener and more resilient future. The rate of #deforestation and forest degradation in south -east Nigeria is alarming. I have observed the causes of this trend to include expansion caused by developmental projects like construction and housing as well as land for commercial farming. There is also the quest for charcoal due to the high cost of cooking gas and kerosene. Unfortunately, this region of Nigeria have very small land area (41,440km² out of Nigeria's 923,768km²) only about 3.1% of Nigeria's total landmass. This area also has a population of about 7.8 million people and is reputed to have the highest density in Africa with an estimated density of 1,500 - 2,000 persons per square kilometer. To mitigate the impact of #ClimateChange and reduce the rate of soil erosion prevalent in this geo-political zone the #SustainableEnvironmentSchoolInitiative public enlightenment programmes in schools enlighten the people on the dangers of #deforestation without replacement. With this #ClimateChangeEducation boys, girls and young adults are equipped with the right attitudes, skills and values to enable them contribute in tree planting and saving so that there could be #VegetationRecovery in the region. Through multiplier effects, we have planted over one million trees.

🐯 🐾🌱 #InternationalDayforBiodiversity Did you know that 1 million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction within only a few years! The majority of species listed by the Convention on Migratory Species are in decline, due to habitat loss and direct use. 😔🌍 The well-being of 3.2 billion vulnerable people depends on land that is steadily degrading. 75% of land surface has been significantly altered. 99% of coral reefs are projected to die off, if global warming reaches 2°C. In 2017, roughly 33% of global fish stocks were being fished at biologically unsustainable levels. Around 35% of global wetlands have been lost over the last 50 years. We are facing the highest extinction rate in our history!! 💔 For the world to become sustainable, we need to protect at least 30% of the land and oceans, whereas currently only 1% of the land is protected. 💚 It is vital to understand that we depend on this marvellous web of life and that our survival relys upon it, so we must protect it! #eachactioncounts #noplanetB #coexistance #weboflife #naturelover #partofthesameecosystem
