Meet the antestia bug, easily recognized by its striking tricolor appearance - a mix of black, yellow, and a white face ventral. Found commonly in East Africa, this small, round insect resides on coffee leaves, stems, or seeds, particularly the coffee cherry. But its impact is far from small. The antestia bug reproduces rapidly, with a single insect giving birth to 27 to 36 offspring in just a week, rapidly increasing their numbers. They lay eggs three times a week, averaging 9 to 12 eggs each time, and these hatch within 15 days. This population explosion has dire consequences, affecting both coffee quality and production, making this bug the leading cause of PTD (Potato Taste Defect). Despite challenges, progress is being made. Thanks to the Summer Camp project under our Coffee Scout program, Heza and Bukeye have shown improvement. However, Ninga's side tells a different story due to new farmers joining the hills. The sun rises over lush hills in Burundi, signaling another day of anticipating cherries at each washing station. Despite the challenges posed by landslides slowing production at Heza, our dedicated team has done an excellent job at ensuring that quality and ease are upheld at cherry reception. In the early days of the harvest, cherries trickle in every so often. But as the weeks pass and more cherries ripen, washing stations become a bustling hub of activity, with cherries arriving daily. Ninga sees a particularly early arrival of daily cherries. Ninga washing station receives a higher volume of cherries for two reasons. For starters, there are more farmers with more trees that deliver to Ninga. Additionally, many of the surrounding hills have sandy soil which makes cherries ripen early because of its warmth. Typically a week after Ninga starts to see daily cherry reception, Heza and Bukeye begin to as well. May brings forth a bountiful harvest as most cherries are ready to pick. FASCINATING NATIVE POTATOES More than 4,000 varieties of #native #potatoes grow in the Andean highlands of Peru, Boliva, and Ecuador. Selected over centuries for their taste, texture, shape and color, these potato varieties are very well adapted to the harsh conditions that prevail in the high Andes, at altitudes ranging from 3,500 to 4,200 meters. Farmers generally produce these native varieties with minimal or no use of agrochemicals. Diversity is conserved on farms and in communities for subsistence use and as a highly valued heritage. Most of these varieties never see a market; they are traded among highland and lowland communities and given as gifts for weddings and other occasions. The varieties differ from community to community. It is believed that wild tubers were first domesticated around 8,000 years ago by farmers who lived on the high plains and mountain slopes near Lake Titicaca, which borders modern-day Bolivia and Peru. I planted 40 fruit trees 🌳! I started a mixed orchard 😊 After procrastinating for a while, nature’s spirit possessed me today and I yielded; alongside an amazing farmhand, we prepared and transplanted the following seedlings: Mulberry - 5 Blackberry - 4 Passion fruit - 3 Kiwi - 3 Pomegranate - 5 Apple - 2 Custard apple - 2 Hass avocado - 3 Raspberry - 1 Soursop - 4 (2 different varieties) Mango - 4 Dragon fruit - 4 I intend adding more exotic trees to this orchard. I will search radically for blueberry, nectarine, plum, etc. Tree planting is exhausting yet refreshing. This is our contribution to fighting the cruel effects of climate change in Nigeria and the entire Africa. #plantatree #fruittrees #tree #climatechange #foodsecurity
