Cate Stone, an #OASEIntern at Pacific Seafood, writes: As a wastewater pollutant and best management practices (BMP) intern for Pacific Seafood, my primary project goal is to identify ways to reduce pollutant concentrations in the company’s seafood processing wastewater. More specifically, I am looking at technological and behavioral changes that can be made upstream at multiple facilities that process shrimp and finfish. My first couple of weeks have focused on building background knowledge about current seafood processing procedures at Pacific Seafood and what other BMPs are known about in the industry. This has included interviewing different people at Pacific Seafood, literature searching, and touring facilities on the Oregon Coast. One thing that has surprised me is how specialized each species’ processing steps are and all the different ways waste can be reduced or reused.
