Bayer and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute are collaborating in the clinical development of an active substance for the treatment of humans infected with soil-transmitted helminths. Parasitic worm infections affect the poorest and most deprived communities in tropical and subtropical areas, with the highest prevalence reported from Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and South America. Worldwide, more than 1.5 billion people are infected with at least one soil-transmitted helminth species! The #collaboration with Swiss TPH adds to Bayer’s existing development partnership with the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) to develop a treatment option for onchocerciasis (river blindness). At #WHA77, our global #RareDisease community demonstrated the growing momentum for improving equity and outcomes for Persons Living with a Rare Disease, with the support of the World Health Organization and the Ministries of Health of France, Malaysia, Egypt and Ghana. The message was clear: the vast challenges of treating rare diseases cannot be resolved by a single country or entity. That is why we need to invest in rare diseases, and why we are calling for global action on rare diseases to ensure that #PLWRD are not left behind in #UHC. Let's ensure that rare diseases are a priority on the global health agenda through a WHA Resolution in 2025. In a recent interview, Dr. Wyckliff Omondi - Division Head of Vector-Borne and Neglected Tropical Diseases at the Kenya Ministry of Health sheds light on how the low prioritisation of #NTDs among other factors challenges the country's efforts to #BeatNTDs. "The biggest challenge emerges from the fact that most NTDs are not fatal. As such, they often receive less attention and priority, both from individuals and governments. As a result, there is a mismatch between the burden of NTDs and the allocation of resources to combat them," he notes. Read on for more insights into Dr. Omondi's professional journey in combatting #NTDs and an in-depth look at Kenya's fight against this group of diseases which greatly impact the lives of thousands across the country: ➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️ https://bit.ly/3QMijZO

Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases requires a multi sectoral approach leading to the one health approach. There are many ways of integration, however the stating point is at policy level. Africa CDC is determined to support countries serving with NTD integration at policy level. A number of benefits were highlighted at the Conference on Public Health in Africa, among them, increase access to the community, efficient utilisation of resources, impactful interventions and equally helps not only treat the communities but also address reservoir points of the disease such as animals and water. With multi sectoral integrated interventions, preparedness and surveillance more ca be done to kick out NTDs.

Bringing together experts from one health field, sharing important information on how #AMR occurs and what we can do to address the rapid growing threat to modern medicine. Touching stories from #AMR patients and families on how their lives took a turn as a result of #AntimicrobialResistance Infections. 🎙️" You can actually wipe out 1/4 of this country's population within a year if we don't change the way things are being done. The future is dim if non-action persists but if we choose the way in which we behave, then probably we can begin to reverse the damage that we are seeing." ~ Dr. Evelyn Wesangula. 📺Watch"The Silent Pandemic" documentary here: 👇🏽 https://lnkd.in/dRsU3ceD
