We must embrace rejections as they are a part and parcel of our life.
Coming from a mechanical engineering background, I was desperately yearning for a placement opportunity in an OEM core company during the start of my corporate career. I was almost there and even experienced the thrill of having selected into one for a day until the results were re-released the next day.
Out of 300 candidates, I was fortunate to be among final initially selected 7 candidates. Unfortunately, company had to reverse their decision and select only 1 candidate and offered her a job.
All that enthusiasm faded away in a day.
Of course, there were my friends backing up to come out of that situation and start focusing on upcoming companies. It was really hard at that pre-mature phase to absorb rejections especially when you had conveyed your selection to your closer ones.
But still, time heals everything and once again I focused on my placements and got selected into a Tier 1 core company. But this time, I was keeping my expectations low and waited for some time after announcement of results to share it with others. But, the excitement was not same as the earlier one as this was not an OEM. But still, I went ahead to explore the opportunity I was blessed with.
To be frank, 6 years down the line, I realize that getting into a Tier 1 company during the initial phase of my career had given me immense learnings both in technical aspects as well as people management.
Key benefits of getting into a Tier 1 at the start include better understanding of smaller circle of operations, broader exposure in any given domain, non robust process allow ground level learning which are not affordable when you directly get into an OEM.
It helped me to get the basics set so that I can execute tasks swiftly and I did realize this explicitly when I switched over to OEM during the course of my career.
On the other end, getting into OEM's at the start has other benefits like brand value, structured processes etc.,
Now, the point of discussion is not about OEM or Tier 1 but to accept with what you are blessed with and to take up the challenge forward with believing in self rather comparing yourself with others.

The impact of engineers' motivation on the development and innovation in the automotive industry is undeniable. Leading automotive companies are aware that engaged and motivated employees are a key component of success in a dynamic industrial environment. Therefore, understanding the motivating factors for 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 and 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞/𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 is not only important but essential for the further development of the sector.
🏅𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐀𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭🏅
Quality Engineers are primarily motivated by tailored 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, such as contracts, flexible hours, or the choice between on-site or fully remote work. Additionally, their 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 assist them in development by paying attention to 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬. These arrangements not only enhance their job satisfaction but also contribute to their overall motivation and productivity.
🔧𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐉𝐨𝐛 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧🔧
The greatest motivation for Test Engineers is the opportunity for
𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, often accompanied by 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬. Interestingly, Test Engineers often seek job changes due to 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 with their previous employer or project. This dissatisfaction can lead them to seek new opportunities elsewhere, where they believe they will have greater opportunities for growth and fulfillment.
📡𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞/𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧📡
Hardware/Electronics Engineers, like their first counterparts Quality Engineers, highly value tailored 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬. It's evident that internal conflicts within projects significantly doesn’t impact their willingness to change jobs, which gives them high ambitions in the automotive industry. Despite these challenges, their 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 drive them to excel in their field and contribute to the success of the automotive industry.

Since 2023, Johnson Electric has rolled out the "Global Exchange Program" that provides employees with a unique opportunity to work in our JE overseas sites and participate in global projects, offering employees equal opportunities for growth and self-realization, achieving the goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Below is the sharing of Gary Li, our Lead Engineer from China about his experience working in Switzerland via the program.
In his own words:
“I find the six-month work experience at Johnson Electric in Switzerland, Murten amazing! This special chapter of my career journey has been eye-opening and memorable, inspiring me to go beyond my comfort zone.”
Effective Communication
During my time working in Murten, the colleagues I interacted with were very proactive in expressing their technical positions in their respective fields. Their views were supported by objective data.
Efficient Data Processing
The design engineers at Johnson Electric Murten are good at digital analysis of test results using spreadsheets for automatic data processing. Timely evaluation results will be analyzed using PowerBI upon receiving laboratory test results.
Excellent Production Line
Before going to Johnson Electric Switzerland, I visited the Jiangmen factory to understand more about the factory’s production and technology development prior to seeing the facilities in Murten. JE Multan has different approaches in both processes and designs to ensure a high standard of product quality.
Engineering Design Capability
The engineering design capabilities including FEA, CAD, noise analysis, structural design, and material analysis in China are now of similar standard as in Switzerland. While my expertise is in automotive components, and very often the latest news about the development standards comes from Europe, therefore this explains why sometimes updates about automotive standards will be received by teams in Murten more timely.
I am most thankful to the company for giving me the opportunities, and allowing me to step back and reflect on myself. With the support of my family, leaders, and the group, I shall continue to learn and improve. Plato’s three questions about life inspired me - to strive to become the cornerstone of my company. The future is promising.
