This is the sort of PPA that will take next-generation geothermal forward. 320 MW ! Details of the Cape Station project as follows: "Geothermal start-up Fervo Energy has sealed a deal to supply geothermal energy to local utility Southern California Edison (SCE) for 15 years from its 400-MW Cape Station project, currently under construction in southwest Utah. Located in Beaver County, Cape Station will be realised in two stages. The first 70-MW phase is scheduled to be operational by 2026, while the second one is expected to go live by 2028. The parties have signed two power purchase agreement (PPA) for a total of 320 MW, an amount equivalent to the annual power needs of 350,000 homes, a press statement said today. With the SCE contract, Fervo noted that it has now contracted 373 MW of renewable power from Cape Station, boasting the world’s largest geothermal PPA. In 2022, the company contracted 53 MW to California community choice aggregators." https://lnkd.in/gq7JXaZH California has plenty of geothermal resources at The Geysers and Salton Sea. So do Indonesia and the Philippines. But the known geothermal reserves are for conventional hydrothermal. Next-generation geothermal opens up so many more possible areas. Data centres in these Ring of Fire countries can be powered by clean baseload geothermal energy.

I honestly think geothermal is the biggest sleeper energy tech out there. Amidst all the polarised anti-solar/wind (variable generation, land use, dead birds 🤦♂️) and anti-nuclear (radioactive waste, project complexity, broken regulatory regime) rhetoric, few are talking about this: Geothermal energy just requires some water and a big f@cking hole in the ground* in order to generate safe baseload power 24/7. Expect to hear a lot more about this in the coming years. *Am I massively oversimplifying? Of course. But the technology is advancing in leaps and bounds.

Today, EPRI announced a new, three-year initiative — EVs2Scale2030 — that will bring together more than 500 stakeholders including Amazon, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and leading electric companies to ready the electric grid in support of the accelerated development of #EV charging infrastructure. “Collaboration, coordination, and standardization will be critical for the U.S. to meet its 2030 EV targets,” said EPRI President and CEO Arshad Mansoor. “EVs2Scale2030 will bring together all of the key industry stakeholders to identify and address the challenges and opportunities needed to drive toward an affordable, equitable, and reliable clean energy future.” Founding electric company members include: Austin Energy, CenterPoint Energy, Con Edison, FirstEnergy, Great River Energy, National Grid, New York Power Authority, Omaha Public Power District, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Portland General Electric, SMUD, Salt River Project, Seattle City Light, Southern California Edison (SCE), Southern Company, and Xcel Energy. This is NEWS! Among key resources, the EPRI EVs2Scale initiative plans to create: 1) A 50-state visualization and 2030 roadmap identifying the aggregated and anonymized electric vehicle loads, grid impacts, utility lead times, workforce requirements, and costs; 2) An online platform that defines the cross-industry processes needed to support the pace of activity and investment required to meet large-scale electrification by 2030; and 3) A secure data exchange platform for fleet operators and charging providers that allows energy companies to better plan and prioritize investments in grid upgrades.

National Grid's energy experts are often asked if the electric grid can support a switch to electric vehicles. The answer is yes – if we work together to make sure our infrastructure is ready. Widespread electric vehicle use for personal and business transportation will be vital to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and hitting New York’s climate change goals. National Grid has been preparing for transportation electrification for years, mapping the best locations to add fast charging stations along New York’s highways and installing EV charging stations at schools, apartment buildings, and other sites across the state. We’re thrilled to participate in EPRI’s EVs2Scale2030 initiative. This project brings together utilities across the country, the DOE, and fleet operators to build a 50-state roadmap for vehicle electrification. We are preparing for the massive increase in EV infrastructure that will be needed to hit our nationwide EV goals and New York’s emissions reductions targets.
